Summary0024313: We need to be able to transfer of control of fleet centerpieces between players
DescriptionWhichever engineering beam is the one that builds the unit/structure is the one that claims it when claiming a system for the first time. Want to troll your friends? Leave a combat engineer next to his golem he's claiming and even though he takes the system, the loot is yours! Not only that, you CAN'T give it back. We can trade ship lines, please give us a way to trade fleet centerpieces, as well as command stations and structures.

There is a problem of science spent on upgrading the centerpiece. There are several possibilities of how this can be handled:

Handle it like we currently handle transferring a ship line: Each player has their own mark level for the centerpiece based on their individual science investment in that centerpiece.
Pro: This is consistent with how things work already.
Con: If one player spends science to upgrade a centerpiece, and then transfer it to another, that science is in effect wasted, as this is individual upgrades.

Allow transfers until you invest science into the fleet centerpiece, afterwards transfers are impossible.
Pro: One player cannot "waste" science on the centerpiece by trading it to another.
Con: This locks the centerpiece to a player if they choose to invest into it.

Transfer the centerpiece at the level it is upgraded to the other player.
Pro: Science is not wasted.
Con: This can be abused to pool science between players to upgrade centerpieces higher than they otherwise would be able to.

Transfer the centerpiece and erase all science expenditure at the point of transfer.
Pro: This can't be abused in any way.
Con: This is probably the most vanilla method and least flexible method. It will likely leave people with a bad taste in their mouths.

This is one of the chief reasons that the multi-faction multiplayer is still in alpha, rather than beta. The ability to gift ship lines is there already, but not fleets yet. It's on my todo list! It's one of the last things holding it back from a beta (feature complete) status. Most other things are just bugs.

I know you said it was on your to do list. I just wanted to formally put it on mantis while I remembered to. I'm happy that it is on your list though.

Having it on mantis formally is a good thing. And I had not thought about fleet upgrades, which is an issue I'm glad you raised.

My first inclination is just to gift the science back to the original player. So if you spent 6k science upgrading fleet A, and you give it to me, then I get it un-upgraded but you get your 6k science back. The one downside is that I can then use that sort of gifting to undo science expenditures, but I don't really mind that.

I had thought about the gifting of science back last night actually. I like that idea personally. That way you can't "embezzle" science between players, and it limits the min/maxing of science spending. About the most you could do with that is undo spending science on a transport you don't want to use anymore, but you spent on early for more HP.

Done!

* In multi-empire multiplayer games, human players can now gift fleets from one to another.
** This works for all kinds of fleets, even those that have not been fully claimed, or which are crippled, etc. Mobile fleets, starting fleets, lone wolves, support fleets, entire planet fleets, whatever.
** The one exception on type of fleet you can't gift is your home planet's command fleet (with your home command station, etc).
** And the one other exception in terms of fleet status that you can't gift is a fleet with a dead centerpiece. This is almost always a planet you used to own but your command station is dead.
** The button for this is directly in the fleet management window, and only appears if there are multiple human empires. If there are only humans sharing one empire, or humans who have an empire and others who have a champion, then this button does not appear.
** This is one of the very last features needed for multi-faction multiplayer to leave alpha status and go into beta status. It's not THE last feature, but it's definitely the most complicated to code. We weren't planning on doing this today, but when working the the ship line swap feature restrictions we suddenly had a clear picture of how this would work, so just knocked it on out.
