| Description | I've been working on a planet name list to publish as a mod, but x4000 offered to use it as a lobby option. So here it is. I call it Oddball. Feedback is dreaded. TAGLINE "Aims to give a sense of history. One heavy with warfare and bored scout captains." DETAILS I've gone for comedy. It's weird, but the sort of weird you could still see on the sillier end of scifi works. Going completely off the wall would just be annoying. I've also avoided memes and recent pop culture references. I've broken every one of the above principles. Most only once or twice, the comedy one more often - some of the WWI references are downright sordid. Keeping with the backstory of the game, I've aimed to give the impression of a setting that's worn in and rather worn out. Humanity's long since familiar with star travel. The majesty of the cosmos is undimmed, but easier to miss thanks to the smoking ruins and other forms of mankind's dirty fingerprints. I haven't even tried to keep a consistent tone. Place names shouldn't have one. CREDITS Several people I know have made suggestions that made it in, and some also helped with sanity checks. (I haven't even been asking for entries - I just have to mention what I'm working on and these weirdos start tossing around their own ideas and having fun. I'm lucky to know them.) If you integrate Oddball as a lobby option, I request that you include to the following list of names in the tooltip: "Thanks to Loweko, R. Jean Mathieu, Vornicus, McMartin, Reiver, Quasispace, Derakon, Kyoshyu & the anonymous." Each of these people has confirmed to me that they're giving permission to use their entry or entries, and that they have no objections to being mentioned in this manner and by this name or nick. They all also deserve to be thanked. I'm hoping dragging other people into this won't be a problem for using Oddball as a lobby option, but if it is, I'm cool with just making the list a mod. PROFANITY, OBSCENITY & COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL I've removed Super Mario World and Moraff's World from the working version and changed Chaos Engine to Calamity Engine. What's the score on Hyundai Prime and PepsiCo IV? I've left those in for the time being. The closest thing to profanity is Fugazi, a Vietnam-era term for something broken beyond repair. It's certainly reminiscent of FUBAR and the F in FUBAR, but still distinct. The closest things on the list to obscenity and alcohol use are Naughty Bit, BUTTS., C2H5OH, and Last Call. I feel those are more than a comfortable distance away. REFERENCES The list makes extensive use of references. You've got Helen Keller, 20-year-old Flash animations, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, 1910s scifi, Alice in Wonderland, bash.org, Bionic Dues, the works. I've followed the principle I got from Pratchett that to borrow from one source is plagiarism, to use twenty makes it a reference or a homage. I haven't used any one source more than two or three times, but haven't kept track of them beyond that. KNOWN ISSUES - The galaxy screen looks a bit cluttered when zoomed out. - Several of the longer planet names (max 24 characters) are severely truncated in notifications in the upper left of the screen. I've found this to be a minor issue (e.g. New New New Verdun is still distinguished from New New), and the full name is displayed on mouseover, but then I'm more familiar with the list than most. The list may not be for everyone, which I consider alright since it's supposed to be an option. - I'm a dreadful bore. | ||||
