| Description | DETAILS An AI reconquest wave triggered against a planet where I had a military command station under construction, but which was otherwise foolishly defenseless. The AI built a reconquest command station and started warping in guard posts, but guardians & dire guardian spawned on my side. It's worth noting I was using custom planet names at the time. I'm building a collection that I hope to publish as a mod. I had inserted them into the game by replacing the contents of Viss Valdyr German 10 letter.txt with my own, shorter planet name list and picking them during custom start. The list is not limited to 10 letters and contains some special characters. Still, I hope this report is worthwhile. STEPS TO REPRODUCE Unsuccessful. This is very helpful, thank you! And the custom planet names won't hurt anything. If you'd like for us to distribute your planet name list at some point directly through the game (just as a lobby option, not a mod people have to install separately), then we'd be happy to do that so long as it doesn't have anything copyrighted (homages are fine, as you can see that I've done that myself in the main one) or profane. You can see how we've handled other folks' lists, where they are credited in the tooltip. |

The closest thing to profanity in it is "Fugazi", which is a Vietnam-era term for something broken beyond repair and does resembles a certain profanity, but isn't actually one. The list also features Naughty Bit, BUTTS., C2H5OH, and Last Call, the closest things on it to obscenity and alcohol use, but those aren't very close at all, are they? I'm calling the list Oddball. The list is mainly comedy, but I've also sought the impression that mankind has been around for a while, gone through a lot of things, several of them not good. I've aimed for the sort of silliness that could conceivably be found in the more whimsical sort of scifi story, so I've eschewed memes. There's a number of weary, pessimistic references to the evils of wars like the one in the game's backstory. The tonal clash is entirely on purpose: I think one is essential for that lived-in feel. The list is also very heavy on the homages, following the principle that to borrow from one is plagiarism, to borrow from twenty is referencing and playing homage. (I got that from Pratchett.) You've got Helen Keller, a 20-year-old Flash animations, 1910s scifi, bash.org, Hunter S. Thompson, what have you. I haven't kept track of the number of sources beyond making sure I don't use any one of them more than two or three times. But enough advertising. Here's the list. Oddball.txt (3,370 bytes)

Here are a few shots of the list (beta version) in action. No technical issues with special characters. Fully zoomed out, the galaxy map gets crowded in places; I haven't found this to impair its legibility. But note the notifications in the upper left. I have a thing for longer names and several of them are clipped in notifications. I've had no problems identifying them (though I'm ofc fairly familiar with them). What's more serious is that, though rare, a long name can obscure a number in an adjacent notification. This was a problem for me until I noticed I could mouse over the adjacent one to get the information, and a niggle thereafter. Nonetheless, I've found using the list to be good fun. (I would, wouldn't I?) The people being thanked are my friends or compatriots, who did sanity checks and/or made suggestions that made it into the list. (Unsolicited - I just have to mention what I'm considering as a name to have this crowd pipe up with their own ideas. I'm lucky to know them.) Each of them has agreed to let me use their suggestions, each of them deserves thanks, and each of them has given me the express go-ahead for being mentioned in this manner. That said, two of them would prefer to be addressed differently, so my suggestion for the mouseover text has to change to: "Aims to give a sense of history. Yes, you're right. I figured that since x4000 made the offer in the replies to this ticket, they were an established communication channel, and suitable for this as long as I kept things compact and straightforward. My first mistake on that front was being me. I'll open a ticket for the list. |

This happened again to me on the latest current build (2.702) with seemingly the same circumstance (Usurper spawning in a reconquest while a military command station was being repaired resulting in Friendly dire guardians spawning along with the guardposts), adding a save of when it already happened again as the previous autosave was a long time ago. |

Also adding the autosave 10 minutes prior to this happening. AI type was Adaptive Any so no idea what it was simulating at the time. |

The only faction without DLCs that should gain... I mean steal Dire Guardians is the Nanocaust. The player can technically gain "Guardians" legitimately by hacking the Human Resistance Fighter's Research Center. This is definitely a bug. I can imagine a player legitimately gaining a dire guardian in a DLC in the future... with a small AIP increase. |

Thanks! * Fixed a bug where guardians could be confused about whose side they were supposed to reinforce, and thus be added to the player faction if the player partly owned a planet that was being reclaimed by the AI at the same time. |
