Summary0022432: Mercenary outpost needs higher target priority
DescriptionSomething that has been on my mind but particularly blatant in my most recent game involving a AI mark 9 with Marauders 10. The marauders make great stride despite the AI efforts.

I noticed the biggest problem both as the player and for the AI is that on every mercenary-held world you need to manually kill the Outposts in order to win. The AI doesn't do this and it shows, as the mercenary will drown the attacking forces with units, and even if an outpost get killed, odds are it'll respawn once or more during the battle.

Outposts needs to be a much higher priority. Even my gunboat (anti armor => bonus versus outposts) don't bother with the outposts while there are ships on the planet.

Note: The devourer golem WILL kill outposts in range, so at least that works.

It's over 10x as high as the next thing. How odd. They're far as I can tell among the highest priority things already.

I think the behavior predates methodical assault but it might be a lead. I will check the behavior when I get more time.

Here is a save to test things out. Use Fleet 2 and 3. Three (officer one) has Gunboat with anti-armor. They should be rushing the outposts (less than 10 ships with 100+ armor otherwise) and they don't.

Both players units and AI will ignore outposts in favour of slugging at each other. Neither sides will move toward the outposts while there are enemies in the way, even if nothing else give them multipliers bonus. Clearing outposts only seem to happen as part of the progressive cleanup of a planet while in pursuit mode.

Maybe they're given something like the orbital cannons or ion cannon? That makes units ignore them in most cases. Units do fire at it if they are in range with nothing better to do, so it can't be that simple.

They don't have anything like OMD or Ion Cannons. Those are target_type_for_player="NeverAutotargetButAllowManualTarget"

Suspect it's that. Far as I can tell in old notes, FRD is meant for the player, not the AI. Bit puzzled about that. I'll have to ask.

I'll need to think more about this thing, because it feels like a potential opinion piece. If there was just one or two Outposts you wouldn't really want to be wading through a bunch of guards to get to it, or the AI ignoring you to go chase friendly Marauders. Just a thought, since there's been people both wanting Ion Cannons and OMDs auto-targeted, and to not be targeted (for hack reasons). Though maybe it's worth it just to stop this. Decisions...

As a note, the Devourer isn't actually meant to shoot structures, heh. That puts a hole in my theory about it being a problem with one restricted weapon being given targets by a normal one. Unless it just AoE'd something next to the Outpost.
