Summary | 0022002: Settable hotkeys for ship types on a planet
Description | In addition to being able to set fleet group hotkeys with keyboard commands (https://bugtracker.arcengames.com/view.php?id=21858), there should probably be a more standard RTS group hotkey system. Because hotkeys are great, and there should be one for everything. In order to not break how fleets work, here's my suggestion: -When you have any number of units selected, pressing ctrl + [F1..F12] assigns all the different selected ship types to that hotkey. -Then, pressing that hotkey selects all ships with those types on the planet in focus. For example, if you have 40 fusion bombers and 12 heavy fusion bombers selected, and you press ctrl+F1, then F1 will always select all fusion bombers and heavy fusion bombers on the planet, until rebound with the ctrl-command. Fusion bombers are probably the main focus of this, as I often want to select all of them and send them at a guard post or something. While you can technically pause, some people don't want to, and any time spent visually parsing the planet sidebar is not spent on paying attention to the battle and making meaningful decisions.

I can't remember, do we have a "select all bombers at the current planet" hotkey at present? If not, then we need to add one for cases like yours. Beyond that, this is what custom fleets are for -- if you're wanting to have things used over a long period of time. If you just want to quickly select bombers, we need a hotkey for that in general. The problem with the traditional style of control groups is that units die constantly, move between planets, and a whole host of other things. So these other two solutions have been implemented to eliminate some of the otherwise-intractable problems that the first game and earlier versions of this game had. |
|
So if a "select all bombers at the current planet" is alright, why not a "select the ships you want to select at the current planet"? I tried to word this suggestion in a way that adds shortcuts to something that you can already do with the UI, but without the problems you mentioned. The only real change here - as far as I know - is that the players can turn their thoughts into game commands faster. |

This would be partially mitigated if the Planet tab had more clarity, by using more than just the icon to represent unit types. Clicking on a unit in the Planet tab selects them, but right now all you have are the icons, and they are insufficiently descriptive or distinctive to easily signal what they represent. |
