DescriptionI feel a good mechanic that could be implemented for attack focused defensive ships could be a ship that increases its attack power slightly for each hit it takes. To describe the mechanic in tooltip form with variables replacing exact numbers:

Every individual attack that this ship receives increases the power of its next shot by X%, up to a maximum of Y%. Attacking uses this stored energy, decreasing this value by Z%

With these numbers you can do things like make a starship that's specifically good against swarmers - 1%, 150%, 50% with a multi targeting weapon - or make a fleet ship that good vs guardians and starships in mixed fleets - 2%, 100%, 100% with a single shot weapon with a mass bonus.
