Summary0002072: Mk. III+ Ion Cannons WAY too freaking expensive
DescriptionI know that Ion Cannons are supposed to be expensive, to the point where it is not all that practical to get them. But the Mk. IV and Mk. V are insultingly expensive. (43 million and 129.6 million respectively X_X) Even with every planet under your thumb in a 120 planet map, it would freaking forever to get enough resources for them. The Mk. III not insultingly expensive, and you may be able to build it in a normal length game, but it is still way too expensive for what it does. Even the Mk. II has gotten pretty expensive.

The other reason for their high costs, to serve as an resource cache to scrap and get, has been severely nerfed, so reducing the cost won't hurt that very much.

Can the higher Mk. versions be made expensive enough to become a very-late game thing, but not so expensive they become a "never without cheats" game thing?

Nothing wrong with the tone :)

The mkIII+ versions were added pretty recently, and were initially not available via the trader and were not capturable. People fussed about this, so we added them to the trader and made them capturable. This may have been a mistake ;)

It's mostly the unattainable costs of the Mk. III and up. I'm just asking for reasonable costs for the late-mid game for Mk. III, the late game for the Mk. IV, and the very-late game for the Mk. V. If you don't think that can be done without making them OP, then they should not be offered by the Zenith Traders, as it is mostly a slap in the face IMO.

Then again, sometimes it is funny to leave a "ULTIMATE" weapon that costs more than you can reasonably get in a game. I've seen a few RPGs and RTSs that do it.

Also, I noticed that the costs grow faster than 2^(mk.lvl), was that on purpose?

Ion cannons aren't even that useful once you get up to 8 difficulty because they don't scale against the increased ship count.

Then again, neither does anything else really, but Ion Cannons seem even worse off in that respect.

I still say make mark III+ non-capturable and non-buyable, then give them their teeth back.

For the moment, I'm happy with them. They still have pretty good teeth, and they are expensive but not completely unattainable. The scrapping-them-for-cash thing was also fixed.
