Were you working on a custom AI type? It looks like you may have been and your xml editor of choice made a junk file in: C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/AI War 2/GameData/Configuration/AIType/

The file itself is "~$L_AITypes.xml", which looks like a working file of some sort to me. If you delete that file, then the game should run just fine.

I didn't have another file in the AITypes folder and if I did, it was hidden from me. All I did to cause this was change the Tutorial AI from hidden to not hidden. Maybe I clicked something. I don't know I uninstalled and reinstalled it and everything works fine now. Really bizarre.

Ah, yes -- that's a hidden file prefix. If you don't have hidden files revealed, then it would do that. I'm not sure what you used to edit it, but I'd suggest Notepad++ as an alternative. :)
