Summary | 0017855: Enemy Idea: Flocks
Description | As another part of my initiative to bring a little more plain ol' shmup goodness into the gamenhere is anoter idea that crossed my mind: Flock Type Enemies These would seed in groups of say, 3 to 10, and move as a whole in some kind of formation, doing "runs" on the player. If possible these could be set to ignore terrain to make their navigation easier. Once they have passed the layer, they could continue on their way for some time and then turn around for another drive-by, potentially even using a different formation.

We _kinda_ can do that at the moment, with enemies having familiars. |
|
A different and probably easier way to do this would be to have it so that if an enemy type is set to this, the game basically just spawns a big heap of them, starting on the tile it's on, and then looking around at nearby tiles to see if it can make more of them. As opposed to placing a ton of individual enemy tiles, which'd make for a big pile of random whatsits. So that way, you get an enemy fleet of the same things. They dont all have to act as a flock, I think. Honestly, I dont think that sort of behavior is going to work here. It'd be more about wether the enemy in question works well when there's alot of it in an area. I can think of designs that'd work pretty well with this. There's some enemies already in the game right now that'd do well for this, where maybe they appear one at a time early on, but they might appear in groups later in the game. |

I was considering imitating this on a different tack, using a bullet pattern to spawn short-lived angry hornets. |
|
That also would work, definitely. You can actually assign bullet patterns to enemies, and you can have enemies that are spawners of other enemies. So it could be legitimate full enemies being spawned by a holder enemy that are then moving on a track. |
