Summary | 0001707: New Map Style: Clusters
Description | This map type divides the number of stars more or less evenly into four clusters. The could be several cluster map types even with the number of clusters (Clusters (2), Clusters (4),...) Each cluster is a small simple map in itself. connections between clusters are rare and it may even be the case that you have to travel through another cluster to reach the third one. This map forces decision making about capturing the entire home cluster and create a few chokepoints on the planets that connect to another cluster or to hop around the map taking mostly the important connection planets so every cluster is accessible.

Nice idea. |
I had been thinking about putting up an islands idea. It would kinda be like this but with only 5-10 planets per cluster. I support this map idea. |
You mean X-style? :) |
No, think more Standard or Grid style, but with globs with few external conenctions. X has dead end systems. |
Also X has a central planet that you have to go through. |
Draw an example and you may gain my support :) |
Done. I didn't try to count stars (there's 33) or follow any kind of cluster connection rules, just tried to get the basics down, including some of the "odd" connections sometimes seen in standard map styles. The "lone" star on the left was intentional. While the clusters are primarily connected via one system to one system along a large (galactic) distance, the occasional double-connection or double-jump is desirable. |
That looks almost exactly like what my idea was like. Only thing is that my idea just makes additional clusters with more planets instead of adding more planets to the clusters. |
Hehe. "More clusters" does become an issue at some point where planets start getting crowded together (had this issue on X once, where two "dead end" planets from different...clusters were almost on top of each other). Just because you tend to prioritize space between clusters over space between planets (so whatever algorithm you're using to connect planets doesn't try to merge two clusters). |
Yeah that's badically what I meant in a picture. The connections between the clusters don't have to be the same. They are either randomised few, X, as shown in the picture or there are different cluster mapstyles to choose from that will have different cluster connections. |
>> Done. Idem :) |
I know it is supposedly tough to find such "clusters" in already made graphs, but I don't know how hard it is algorithmically to generate one (in the general case of N clusters) Anyone who is more familiar with graph algorithms want to to enlighten me some? |
Oh, generating clusters would be easy. You generate four (or more) "standard" maps of a few planets each, then treat each group as its own planet and form more connections with the other groups. |
Duh, that does sounds easy. Thanks. :) |
This would probably become my standard map type should it be added. Yay chokepoints! |
I LOVE this map, was searching for something like it when creating my first couple games but nada :( |
I have been pushing for this maptype for years. Would love to see this in the next expansion. |
This map style reminds me of old Wing Commander Armada days... I would like cluster sizes to vary somewhat, however. |
> I would like cluster sizes to vary somewhat, however. If you check out what I said about the quick-art I did, the cluster sizes are variant. In the image, the upper right cluster is 10 planets, the lower two are 7 each, and the last one is 8. They should all be "about" the same size (i.e. no 4-planet cluster and 20 planet cluster) but variance is good. |
Indeed. Cluster size and count should be able to vary. |
In for 5.070 :) |
OH FOX YES. Clusters is the bestest map type. |
