Summary0000141: 3.701 sound distortion and game stutter
DescriptionDuring battle the sound is distorted, and every few seconds there is a tiny gap (silence for perhaps a quarter of a second) in the sounds, combined with a tiny 'freeze', as if the game is overloaded (like if it is doing some heavy reading/writing to/from disk).

I am playing a saved game from 3.189, I attack with some 800 ships against some 350 ships.

Save game attached, attack Antares from Axel Nebula and see/listen for yourself.

Err wait, you chose 3.700 in the bug report, but your title states 3.701. Which version are you using? It this is in 3.701 then the bug is _not_ resolved as per the other report.

I chose 3.700, as there is no 3.701 to choose in the pop up menu.

But I explicitly write 3.701 in the subject title, because the issue is still not solved satisfactorily in 3.701. It actually makes the game almost unplayable, so instead of playing I have spent some quality time hunting bugs (as you can see from my rather long list of reports).

Will investigate, thanks.

Odd, I can select 3.701 in the version list...anyways, thanks for making things clear, I'm currently suffering from a bad fever, so my mental faculties are not what they should be ;)

The version list was changed after I wrote the bug report. I am writing from Europe, so if I post something before noon it will arrive on arcens server in the middle of the night, North Carolina time. I guess x4k made this change first thing this morning - which here in Copenhagen is in the afternoon.

Hope you will get well soon. :)

I'm in Sweden myself, so close by ;) And yeah, working on getting well. Nice job to get so many reports in!

The problem is not sound related, I turned off the sound, and the lag is still there. It seems to be periodic, every 8-10 seconds there is a very small lag. Most noticable when a battle is going on, but the lag is there all the time. Scrolling/panning seems to have the same kind of lag.

And the sound is still distorted - the reason why I thought the sound issue and the lag was connected was because the lag is simultaneous with a sound fall-out.

The distortion sound problem is described here:
http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,7205.msg57341.html#msg57341
- and I have the same sound 'card'.

So this is actually two bugs, should I re-report this as two bugs, or just leave it as is?

3.703 There is still some sound distortion. I have noticed as a workaround, that if I turn off either the weapons channel or the explosions channel, the distortion does not happen.

I think some distortion is likely inevitable when there is too much sound being pumped through at once -- as I recall, that used to happen in the SlimDX version, too, and this doesn't seem any worse than that. Curious on your take on that.

No, I just opened 3.189 and played a battle, no clipping there, all sounds good. In 3.703 I can play weapons or explosions, not both without considerable distortion. Something is clearly overloading in Unity on my machine. I checked my sound drivers, Windows High Definition Audio and NVIDIA High Definition Audio, and all drivers are up to date. The workaround for me p. t. is to go without the explosion sounds.

If you're curious, the hitching issue has a new topic, where I've been chasing that down: http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=348

Yes, imo that is a far more important issue than this. This sound clipping issue has a work-around now, so it can wait. But it may give you some trouble when the time comes to put the music in.

I have read all I could find on the internet about Unity 3.0 and sound issues, and it seems there was some problems connected with version 2.6 on win 7 64 bit, but only on some machines. So I suggest that you put the pressure on the Unity crew to fix this issue.

Btw, I found out that their lead sound programmer, Søren Christiansen, is living almost around the corner from where I live (small world), so if the Unity team fails to respond to your request or fix the issue, I could gather some of my more body builder friends and pay him a personal visit to get things fixed (only joking ;))

I believe that this is fixed as good as we'll be able to in 3.709 (in terms of the sound overloading). I've made it do panning between the two speakers randomly for the sound effects, which seems to solve this.
