Summary | 0010228: Add some form of world folder auto-back up
Description | I don't know if this is a big issue latter in the game and if it is, then it might be an invalid suggestion, but for me there is no noticeable time difference when you answer yes or no to the world backup question every time you load a world. If there is no noticeable time difference, why not just auto back-up every time? If disk space usage is concerning, old backups (as per a new setting) can be deleted or frequency can be set up. Anyway, I hit "yes" to the back up question every time, so auto-backup system would certainly not make it any worse space-wise.

Even if it only kept the last 10 back ups or so... |
I had pretty much the same idea and then found this report. Maybe the very first time the player starts a world, an option should pop up saying "Do you want to enable auto world backups?" with it explaining exactly what would happen. As ShaggyMoose says, perhaps the last 10 backups would be kept. An option could be then placed in the settings to allow disabling of this feature. I know I would personally use this. I like the backup option, but clicking that box every time seems a little repetitive. There is always the option for the more advanced user to go directly into their save game folder if they desire individual backups for some reason. |
What about when you want to keep a specific backup without making new ones past it until so far, as like a permanent place to be able to go back to? If it kept only the last 10, and your backup goes poof? ouch. |
Well the more advanced user can easily go into their save game folder and make whatever backups they like, but I see your point. It might not be too bad an idea to give the end-user the option of how they want their backups to be handled. For example as it would read on the settings menu: World Backups: Off World Backups: Auto World Backups: Ask Personally I would just use the auto feature in case one of my worlds became corrupted and if I really needed to backup an individual world I would do it via the save game folder, although having a little choice in how it would be handled might be nice. |
@Kio, as far as I can see this is *exactly* like it works currently. Only 10 latest backups are kept. |
This is a really a matter of convenience versus flexibility, however if it is the case that only 10 backups are saved anyway then it does rather reduce the strength of the case of the current system in terms of flexibility. Personally, my only reason to use the backup feature is as a safeguard against future corruption of my game world, hence I will click yes every time. Clicking yes each and every time I load a game does seem to have an additive effect of annoyance on me, to the extent that it doesn't really even feel like a nice feature (which the facility to backup your game world should be) but more of a chore. If you were to give the user a one-time option of "Would you like to enable auto world backups?" it would feel so much more like a feature to me. The user could then relax knowing that their world is being protected against any future corruption. I believe the current system has small potential to annoy the average user whereas an auto backup feature would have small potential to impress the average user. |
Just to add some weight to my belief that the current system could potentially cause a small annoyance the average user, here is a Let's Play video of a player experiencing this at the 3:37 and and 8:00 marks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA7cVZtOUhk This is pretty typical of the slight annoyance I get at having to press these buttons repeatedly. |
