Summary | 0010216: The green spinning swamp monster should not spawn on hills.
Description | Preemptive .708 bug, based on attempting to play .707 without diagonal aiming. The green spinning swamp monster should not spawn on hills. If the swamp moster spawns at the top or bottom of a hill, there's no way to evade the green puke while being close enough to hit it. * With diagonal controls, it was possible to jump and fire at a downward angle, or fire at an upward angle to hit it. * Without those controls, the window is too short to be able to evade the AOE "snot attack" and still get a shot in. If the monster only spawns where there's space to get in a horizontal or vertical shot, then the player can line themselves up for the shot while it's dormant and get their projectile timing right. They still need to remain in one spot long enough that the AOE is dangerous, unless they're using an exceedingly long-range spell.

I don't think this should be reported until until 0.708 is released. There are options such as just avoiding the monsters, or picking classes that have arced spells, or using ammo spells which tend to be AOE. I do think these monsters could use a little more time or forewarning as to when you can hit them however. As it is I just spam the spell until they're weak and it hits, rather than timing the shot. |

Based on what tigersfan said in the forums, I'm not sure if they know these things are even problems. From: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,12199.msg133150.html#msg133150 > that's largely because it wasn't mentioned in the tutorial and such, but my > point is that there were people playing the game (and enjoying it) without ever > using angled fire, so I'm not sure it's really all that drastic of a change. FWIW, I find the game is completely unplayable w/out angled controls, specifically because of the issues I've documented in bug reports 10216, 10217, 10218. So I'm opting for too much info instead of not enough. |

I never said there wouldn't be any problems. But, for example, I often use a forgician, and I use campfire to block those attacks, then use embershot to kill them off. So, the game isn't unplayable. |

I consider encouragement to take spells beyond straight-shot to be a good thing. For example now the fusillade spells are quite nice for bats. (Though I've found if you move to the side of them, fly like to fly low for ducking and shooting to snag them) Going to add that I'm not opposed to rethinking enemy behavior in general, but I feel its okay if some monsters are hard to deal with using just straight shots and so changing enemy behavior shouldn't be overdone. |

tiger, that's part of my point. Assuming .708 doesn't revamp the monsters to work w/ 4-way aiming, there are existing problems that should be noted. Your example is particularly poignant. Campfire only protects *horizontal shots* travelling a certain distance above the ground. The issue I noted is that these swamp monsters can spawn *when they're at the top or bottom of a hill*. The campfire strategy doesn't work. * With 8-way aim, not an issue. It's possible to dodge while killing it w/ diagonal shots. * With 4-way aiming, there's no way to hit it if it's at the bottom of the hill. At the top of the hill it's difficult to hit *at the right time* without getting AOE'd. Combine that with large HP loss for collisions and the fact that it's a large mob, and the game ceases to be fun (i.e. becomes unplayable). Instead of a challenge of how to kill it and not take damage, I am forced to walk through it and hope there's an easier-to-kill mob to grind and get the HP back. |

I'm not saying that there aren't problems. I'm not sure this is one of them, is all I'm saying. Maybe if you sent me a save of an area where you see a potential issue, I might understand what you are saying better? I really only used diagonal fire to test it, I never use it when I'm just playing, and I've never had an issue with those guys, is my point. |
