Summary | 0009906: Sentinel and Enforcer
Description | Sentinels are surveillance drones that randomly move between guard posts and the command station on their planet. They are unarmed but have a large, always drawn detection radius along with a smaller tachyon radius. If any human military ships enter the detection radius the Sentinel calls the police, er, Enforcer. Cloaked units are not detected (until they enter the tachyon range, of course) and transports don't count. The Sentinel causes attrition in transports that it sees though. Sentinels cannot be destroyed by direct fire but will die when the command station is destroyed (maybe trigger another time-limited alert then?). The Enforcer only appears when a Sentinel calls for it. If no free Enforcer is available one is spawned at the planet owning AI's home command and races towards the alerted planet. Enforcers are big, tough and very fast but their weapons are rather mediocre compared to other ships of their size, they will wear a blob down if given enough time but won't cause a quick wipe. However when an Enforcer reaches the alerted target planet it fires off an EMP ("Freeze!") to give itself some free attacks on the human units and provide a reason to run away BEFORE the Enforcer arrives. The planet's Enforcer alert state resets after a while (maybe a minute) if the Sentinels don't see anything, once the alert ends the Enforcer returns to its homeworld and disappears through the exo wormhole (i.e. it doesn't stay around to defend the HW). A returning Enforcer will still respond to calls if a Sentinel is set off before the Enforcer reaches the HW. An Enforcer in transit isn't very dangerous due to its mediocre weapons and high speed. Sentinels add some stealth gameplay, when operating on their planet the players must sneak around the Sentinels. Transport provide limited protection so that Sentinels don't make troop transports TOO tedious but they shouldn't be a replacement for sneaking either.
