Summary | 0009470: Link AI Progress to percieved threat
Description | Destroying a command center with a pinpoint precision strike causes AI Progress to skyrocket. Driving a thousand-strong doomsday fleet across the universe autoattacking everything in sight does not budge AI Progress at all. This is silly. One possible fix is easy, and, from what I've seen of people discussing the game, how a lot of people think AI War already works: AI Progress should be determined by how dangerous the AI _thinks_ you are. Increment a doom counter once per second per ship visible to the AI. When the counter hits 10000, zero it and increase AI Progress by 1. Reduce AIP penalties for destroying command stations to compensate. Results: Player is suddenly forced to act like a guerilla commander, acting under cover and using the minimal possible force for the job. Blobbing is discouraged; quick, tactical, combat-bonus-exploiting strikes are encouraged. Pushing your blobfleet around bordering worlds like Genghis Khan terrorizing the peasants is no longer the optimal strategy. Game experience matches fiction a hell of a lot more closely. Other possibilites: * Make the mechanic the default behaviour of AI Eyes. Less punitive than the current behaviour, and more thematic -- eye can see you! * Increment doom counter by ship's internal 'threat' score rather than by a flat value.
