Summary0008997: Give the player greater control over background details
DescriptionThe latest beta takes advantage of improved rendering methods to display planets and nebulae with much higher detail and resolution, and brilliant color. For some, however, this results in a background that can distract or overwhelm the eye.

Currently, the only way to deal with this is to turn off planets and/or nebulae.

1. One way to lessen the impact of the background is to offer a saturation slider, which will allow the player to set a more comfortable level of brilliance to the background. Lowest value, 0, would result in a completely gray background, and the highest, 100 or 256, would display at full brilliance. If a slider is not available, a set of toggles may suffice (0-15-30-45-60, etc), or perhaps a number box.

2. Another is to offer a way to control how many background textures can appear at one time. It would be best to offer this in combination with the first option, otherwise the textures that are present may still sometimes obscure technical detail.

3. A third is to offer a toggle between the old graphical assets and the new ones (which would unfortunately require redeploying the old assets in a future patch).

I definitely welcome other ideas.

I always like being able to customize the look of my civilizations (in Gal Civ II, for example), so I'd also like you to consider 0005084, "More color choices for players and AI":

It does look great now, but do people think the planets might want to be a bit less bright by default? I find them in particular distracting with the new vivid colors.

The nebulae and backgrounds are distracting because they're too bright. Otherwise gj.

"3. A third is to offer a toggle between the old graphical assets and the new ones (which would unfortunately require redeploying the old assets in a future patch)."
If I had this option I would use the old ones. The old ones were more realistic and calm. These new ones are "wild" and unnatural/unrealistic looking.

@Kahuna
I think some of that will be fixed once the contrast, brightness, and color balance is adjusted some, to make them less "wild".

But then again, if the shape and how the colors are laid out is something you don't like, then, yea.

I guess you could change out texture files into your install manually, or possibly introduce texture pack support like AVWW has.

For 5.046:

* Added "Nebula Intensity" slider to the graphics tab of the settings window, that controls how faded-out the background nebulae are.
** The default is about 80% of the intensity in the previous version; if you want it back there you can turn it all the way up.

Thanks :)
