Summary0008924: Strange wind shelter behavior
DescriptionI completed a Build Wind Shelter mission* and the wind shelter was spawned on the world map, but the wind was not pushed back in a way that makes any sense (at least not to me). In addition, the wind shelter is not connected to the settlement, although the properly-working wind shelter nearby is.

The placement of the wind shelter on a land tile surrounded by ocean tiles is probably part of the problem, and might be related to why it isn't connected to the settlement. I have since saved/closed the game and loaded it several times, but it appears not to have changed.

I believe that I placed the shelter on a stormy tile (storm depth 1), although I could be mistaken.

(Screenshot attached for analysis - broken wind shelter is on the tile below the canoe/player location)

*[The wind shelter was built in 1.113, but problem is unfixed as of 1.200, and I didn't see anything in the changelogs about it]

This looks like it could be a similar bug to 0008902, but I am not "marooned", and have not seen any such message. Also, the tile I placed the shelter on is the "Abandoned Town", and I am on Continent 1, World and Continent Level 1, which differs from 0008902... But I'll add that as a related issue.

EDIT: The screenshot attached for 0008835 looks like it MIGHT be displaying a similar bug... I'm not going to add it as a related issue, because I'm not too sure.

If you look closely, the 'stormy ocean tiles' to the left of that wind shelter are darker than the 'stormy ocean tiles' to the right of it. The ones on the left are called "Deep Sea" tiles, and they separate continents/are the limit of your current continent. Wind shelters don't push back the wind on these tiles, like they do for "Ocean" tiles that are the lighter blue color and are considered part of your continent.

Besides those deep sea tiles, which un-intuitively aren't supposed to have the wind pushed back by wind shelters, it looks to me like that wind shelter is operating correctly (but I'm just a player myself, so I could be wrong).

That said, I definitely feel your confusion, because after looking around the Big Honkin' Encyclopedia in game there's no obvious place that explains that Deep Sea tiles differ from Ocean Tiles and that Deep Sea tiles are supposed to be immune to Wind Shelters.

As a start to making things clearer, the description of "Summon Wind Shelter" scrolls should probably have an extra paragraph explaining that Wind Shelters will not affect the darker blue stormy "Deep Sea" tiles that separate continents. Or something to that effect.

vadatajs, I took a second screenshot, which shows more clearly the color difference between the ocean tiles. What you said about the wind shelter makes sense, but the tiles on the right of the shelter are light-colored, which means they should be able to be suppressed by the shelter (right?), but that isn't happening.

Or, do wind shelters not push back storms on ANY ocean tile that isn't adjacent to a land tile? That would make sense on my current map, but I only have 4 wind shelters so far, so it's not exactly a thorough test... Anyway, the windstorm still affecting the desert just 3 tiles away from the shelter doesn't make any sense in that context.

Uploading the screencap in one second (note: I cropped it horribly with MS Paint, because I'm too poor for Photoshop or capture hardware)

Wind shelters will only clear continental ocean tiles directly adjacent to land. So, if you built a wind shelter on a 1x1 island in the middle of nowhere, it would clear only the 4 tiles directly adjacent to itself. Any further and you would have to use buoys.

Here is a screenshot illustrating what happened in your scenario. The red outline is the max windshelter radius. The Yellow slashes indicate the non-continental ocean (that means that you cannot take your canoe there, it is not considered part of that island). All the land within the radius is cleared, and all the ocean that is DIRECTLY on the coast is cleared. Sea tiles farther away than 1 square are still stormy.

EDIT: I forgot the northernmost non-continental ocean tile.

I think? everything is in order with saveyourself007, but understanding wind shelter behavior can be kind of confusing. I think I understand it fully now, but only after having read the discussion in this report.

Some way to make this clearer for players would seem really helpful. Ideas:

* before placing a wind shelter, you see an outline of what areas will have the wind pushed away from them (much like khadgar's AS0OE.jpg screenshot).
Some way of showing the player which areas will not have the wind pushed back from them (ocean & shallows not cardinal-direction adjacent to land), and showing them which areas will never have the wind pushed from them (deep sea tiles), would be great.
The clearest (but less-than-pretty) way I can think of doing that, would be to have deep sea tiles have temporary text over them saying 'wind permanent', and the more distant shallows/ocean tiles having the temporary text overlay 'Ocean buoy needed in order to push back the wind here' or something.
Another way: The overlay makes tiles that will lose wind, become a slightly (but not fully) lighter color. Distant shallows/ocean tiles look the same. Deep sea tiles Have an X, slash, or something similar over them.

* As above (a temporary outline visible), except you also/instead see the outline when standing over a complete and/or incomplete wind shelter.

* A new Hidden Tutorial Message, along the lines of: "You're placing a wind shelter for the first time! Here's the details on which tiles will & will not have the wind pushed from them." Alternatively, explain this in the HTM players see when first entering the world map.

* Somehow explain this in the tutorial? Not sure if this is possible, since I believe the tutorial currently doesn't say anything about the world map.

I like the overlay idea a lot more than just a text description (though you probably want both). It would go a long way towards clarifying what would and would not get uncovered before a player actually places a wind shelter.

khadgar, thank you very much; now I see what's going on here. It really is pretty obvious after having it pointed out, but I never would have figured it out just by looking at the map.

As Pyrrhic and vadatajs noted, an outline would make things a lot clearer, at least while planning to place a wind shelter, maybe while hovering over the "Build Wind Shelter" option on the Guardian Powers menu.

A text description wouldn't hurt, either, but a visual description of exactly which tiles would/wouldn't be affected would be a huge help for early players (like me, I guess) - because otherwise it just looks completely random at first.
