Summary0008705: Increase duration of Flash of Light
DescriptionMostly, because it's basically useless at 10 seconds, and there's no such thing as a good light source most of the time; even moon lamps, you have to be carrying like 150 of them around if you're gonna do any real exploring, because you have to drop them so frequently (and searching for more moon lamps gets old fast). Ball of Light isnt even worth using, and the "inner light" enchant is worthless due to it taking up an otherwise important slot.

As it is, I find myself avoiding caves entirely simply due to the lack of any decent way to light them up. Surface chunks can be lit entirely by just using Sunrise, and buildings often have their own light, as well as rooms that arent so huge that you need to drop more than one or two Moon Lamps.


This isnt like a major balance issue, it's mostly just something that, currently, is pretty darn obnoxious but doesnt have to be.

Does the time duration still go up for each time you upgrade it, or have they changed that?

Currently, my main lighting solution is to build a Telescope, but that's a different matter. :P

Anyway, I'd argue that the main problem with Flash Of Light is pretty much that it's a pain to keep having to cast it over and over. I wouldn't go with increasing duration, since the core problem still remains of having to fire it every so often. It'd be better if it worked in the same manner as shields (minus the turning off on new room and minus the time limit) - in essence, it would be an on / off affair that constantly drains mana and provides light while it is on.

Also, LayZboy, Flash Of Light can't be upgraded any more, so there's that.

Actually, if it functioned in the same way as a shield, it'd probably just be worse. In caves and such, you need the light there before you can fight anything, but it's hard to attack at all while your mana is constantly draining. For shields, I usually never try to fire other spells while the shield is up, because it just leads to trouble.

I found that with the duration anywhere from 30-50, it really wasnt annoying to use.... I just hit the button for it every now and then. If I'm exploring and using Moon Lamps instead, chances are I'm hitting the button to drop the lamps roughly that often ANYWAY, so.... and the less said about Ball of Light, the better :P

All that being said, I can see why adding such a spell as you describe might not be a bad idea, for the type of players that would want that. There arent that many ways of generating light right now, and a couple of them are just too weak to be of much use. A couple more light spells/items/something wouldnt be a bad idea.

* Flash of Light now costs 160 mana rather than 120, but lights up your way for 30 seconds rather than 10.
