Problem is, these would kill most monsters (and in fact even bosses) without even any intervention from you. |
I think they shouldn't hurt bosses, but they should be able to kill monsters. They should only activate when you're near them though. That way you get to see/initiate the slaughter taking place -- the monsters can't activate them. |
I'm thinking of a new "dominate trap" spell that would make the traps hurt you and monsters -- but not bosses or ghosts. That might be the most straightforward/interesting thing. |
OK that's pretty cool. I like it. |

Actually on second thought... I'm not sure that a spell is the best choice here. It's easier to just kill monsters with spells. Why would I invest in a spell to manipulate traps? It's a very situation-dependent thing, and it's just not worth the investment. Even pulling out that spell in the midst of a battle is something I probably wouldn't do. This needs to be more of a spur of the moment thing. I see the monster, it's in the range of an inactive trap. I want to do something cool and different, so I approach the trap, causing it to activate and kill the monster. The point is, this isn't something I'm going to plan ahead of time for. It's a relatively minor thing that's really cool to do when it happens to work out, but if it becomes part of the long-range game, nobody will use it. |
It depends on how prevalent traps become. At any rate, I choose to defer on this one until probably much later, because as it stands it's not at all clear to me how this should work. The main thing it would do if implemented as you suggest is reduce difficulty, which is kind of the opposite of the infestation goals. ;) |
I'd agree that a spell isn't quite right. Instead, what if rooms with traps always have a switch somewhere that when used let traps hurt monsters; that way, using traps against monsters will usually mean getting past all the monsters and traps first. |
I think the goal of infestations shouldn't be to make the game harder. The goal should be to make the environment a bigger part of the game ie to give different areas more impact and options for the player. Having the monsters be hurt by at least some traps gives tactical options and threats to the player at the same time. A great example is the switch rooms with traps in the outposts. I'd love for those rooms to sometimes be packed with monsters which I can either fight or just race to the top, press the switch and fwoosh -- fried monsters. |
