Summary | 0007875: Epic deeds give bonus upgrade points
Description | I think it'd be cool if characters very rarely got an extra upgrade point above the 10 maximum. This could be from doing 'epic' things. Not sure what the definition of epic is, but the key here is to allow balance for an infinite game, right? So I'm thinking there would be some kind of extra unlock system, perhaps even hidden unlocks. The player does something really dangerous and there's a chance of getting the extra upgrade point. It'd have to be connected to living and adventuring for a (certain) long amount of time time as well. Once you got that upgrade point for doing that specific dangerous things, you can't get it for the same thing again. It's a more realistic notion of character advancement: you do unique things and your mind/body learn something. But you can't just keep doing the same thing... that doesn't push your limits. Advantages: - It'd give a sense of progression for the character -- something to look forward to. RIght now, a character with 10 upgrades has nothing to look forward to. - It'd give a real sense of loss when the character is gone. In a sense, this is a pseudo-XP system -- one that intelligently gives XP only for doing specific things and never for the same things twice. I actually don't think I've ever seen such a system in a game. But this system also combines with the upgrade stone mechanism of customizing your character at first the way you want to. I think this system is also ideal for an infinite game, since you can slowly dole out unique hidden epic unlocks as you go, and since they're hidden, nobody can just go and perform all the feats (it should be really hard to do them and survive long enough with one character anyway).

I'm not sure I can see this working, mostly due to balance issues and the "you aren't going to keep this character" concept. I agree that there should be a way to empower characters the further down the rabbit hole they go, but it seems like wasted effort to link that to a single character and then make it impossible to get again. I'd think that hidden unlockables that globally increase the upgrade limit are a good idea, as is making them extremely hard or dangerous to do. |

Sorry -- I didn't mean that you can never get it again. You can't ever get the same bonus accomplishment for the same character again. |
