Summary | 0007488: Monster Pets
Description | Inspired by the rescue missions, I thought it would be cool to have the ability to collect monsters as pets. Monsters can become your pet after killing a certain monster x times or "feeding" it an item to entice it to join you. You could bring a pet with you when you go exploring and upgrade its stats using upgrade stones or specialized monster upgrade stones. Pets can be stored in a monster farm of sorts in each settlement with a whole other aspect of the game consisting of collecting all the different monsters on the continent(s). Pet spells can be upgraded in a similar fashion to regular spells.

Not to be critical, but I feel like Monster Rancher/Pokemon-like elements don't quite fit in this game. The idea of a monster following you around is cool, but I can only imagine the nightmare of getting them to path correctly to follow you everywhere. |
I thought the pathing of the people you have to rescue was done fairly well, and that was in an long corridor with various obstacles. |
Even if you take the pathing thing out, I still think it hasn't got a place in this game. I don't see the point of hunting monster bait items, in the chance you might get a monster as a pet, which will then require feeding and special upgrades and special spells, it just seems like a whole lot of work without any payoff. A pet water esper sounds cool in principle, but it seems to me like it's needlessly adding another level of complexity to character development. |
A companion in an otherwise barren and desolate land doesn't make sense? |
I think that its worth considering. Acquiring monster allies is what revolutionized FFXIII-2 and made the gameplay 10 times more fun then its predecessor, along with the moogle companion. Though I admit that it would add a whole other level of complexity to an already fairly complex progression system. |
I think monster pet doesn't fit this game, for these reasons: 1. You dash incredibly fast, you jump (up to 4 times in row), you fall (sometimes almost top to bottom in a cavern chunk). Having a pet that can follow the player will require the pet to be no clipping, moving fast, flying, being able to breathe underwater, which makes them very unrealistic. 2. I think most of players don't mind their controllable characters' deaths, as the game says. And indeed characters die very often. If so, having a pet just add one more entity to die with. 3. In Pokemon or something in which we can pet monsters, most of the monsters are quite harmless if we don't attack, don't you think? In this game monsters, even the smallest ones are very aggressive, attacking every human in their sights. |
Actually, I like the core of the idea. If it's implemented, I've no doubt it will be implemented in such a way as fits with the game, so I'm not too concerned about that, personally. |
