Summary | 0007200: Suggestion for floating text when picking up many close items
Description | When picking up items that are too close to each other (for instance a set of wood platforms and a set of upgrade stones), the floating text of one of the items will partially hide the floating text of the other item. I'm not really sure how best to fix this. Some ideas: 1) detect that two items are close enough for their pickup text to overlap and offset the second text if they are picked up in a short timespan 2) make floating text float up a bit faster and queue item pickup floating text, with a delay between them long enough to ensure that they will not overlap (say, this is pretty much what happens when getting healed by a bunch of health pickups, no?)

The more I think about it, the better/easier I think solution 2 would be. It would just mean processing item pickup feedback in a queue rather than displaying it immediately. No need for weird item distance computation or special time tracking... |

It's fairly computationally complex to change that. And it shows you the same info in your message log anyhow, so no information is really lost. The popups are more convenience than anything else in my opinion, honestly. |

The queue would be computationally easier, yes, by the way -- just saw your second note. But then you get into queuin many popups from the player in general, and the delay could grow annoyingly large -- seeming very laggy compared to what it is now. My thought is that while this way hampers readability, it keeps things flowing smooth and there is a second onscreen source showing in more detail what was added anyhow. The reason we added the floating text was that pillagers with sound off on large monitors would often miss they had picked up anything. The actual label of what they picked up was a small bonus. :) |
