Summary | 0007192: Prioritizing stuff in the encyclopedia
Description | I'd like to give some feedback about what I find myself using most, and how to perhaps mold the planning menu to be most effective for what people want to find. (I know it's late in the game. This is easily post 1.0 stuff) I always go to All Spells and look through spells that way, simply because it's the easiest way to find what I want. I can also browse through some other interesting looking spells that way. I don't want to bother with filtering through the menu because I'll miss something that way. That option should probably be at the top, or perhaps even it should be the only option. Perhaps the interface can be changed to show all spells by default, with additional (very clear) filter buttons to narrow down the choices. That way, you always spend time in the same screen, but you can play around and categorize by stuff. Also, I never ever look at craft-ready spells. I can get the same info when I go to craft a spell. 'Crafting Grimoire' is also a bit of a difficult word for many people. I didn't know what grimoire meant, and my vocabulary is probably above average. And since it isn't really a magic textbook anyway, why not just call it 'Spells'? Material Compendium could use the same treatment. I never go there, because I only care about that info coming from spells. It's still good to have that info, but it's probably pretty low on my list, so it should probably be at the bottom. And once again, making the choice of which filter to use up front (common/arcane/building materials) is needlessly confusing. One list that can be clearly filtered with buttons is easier to get into and easier to play around with. (Once a filter is applied, there should be a text saying "Showing only arcane ingredients".) Also, it could probably just be changed to 'Materials'. Long words and all that (though I did know Compendium :) ) The guardian power list should be filterable by profession and by level (all levels/1/2/3...) simultaneously. It would be nice if this would be hyperlinked from the building list (which should also be in the planning menu) so that a building will say which profession/level it enables, and clicking will take you to a filtered version of the guardian power list page. Once again, Guardian Powers is a good enough name for the page. I would put Spells, Materials, Guardian Powers, Buildings and Supplies Manifest on the left, with everything else on the right. Everything else is optional. Actually, the Supplies Manifest probably belongs in the Continent Status, and should just be 'Settlement Supplies'. Finally, you may just want to stick another link to Spells in the main Planning Menu. Having to go through the encyclopedia causes an extra click + finding the right button (and currently choosing the filter you want). And once the Spells button shows you a filterable list right away, you're only ever 2 clicks away from being able to see info about spells. The rest of the info (materials, buildings, guardian powers, unlockables) is nowhere near as important since you don't consult it that often and can be left in the encyclopedia. Calling the encyclopedia 'Big Honkin'' is cute, but 'Big' and 'Encyclopedia' can discourage people from checking out information that they might need. Not sure what to replace it with though. Perhaps an 'Unlockables' button, that expands to Mysteries, Unlockables and Achievements could be spun out of the encyclopedia, making it not as big and intimidating :) Finally, I feel something can be done to unify Where To Find Stuff You Want, the Material Compendium and the Supplies Manifest. There's some repetition there and also some things that are similar but not quite the same. Not sure how to do that at this point. If I had to say what my vision would be of a complete planning menu that's as easy to use as possible, it would open up to something bigger than the current menu. It would have Things You Should Do, Maps Guide and Tips & Advice in easily accessible places, but it would also list the main things you need to know about: Settlement (aka Continent Status), Spells, Materials, Guardian Powers, Buildings, Unlockables. Everything important easily accessible, and nothing is called an encyclopedia. Perhaps the noob-oriented buttons would be lined up at the top, and the info buttons would be laid out along the bottom, so that even before opening the menu, a pro player can know where to find his info buttons.
