Summary0007069: Projectile Speed Enchants exacerbate Spell inaccuracy
DescriptionPlasma Bolt is the most obvious example of a spell which doesn't hit where you are aiming when shooting at an angle normally, and most of the other spells it happens on it's almost imperceptible.

However add a Projectile Speed enchant into the mix and the smaller errors become noticeable and Plasma Bolt becomes almost useless (see screenshots).

i'm experiencing something similar with energy pulse with a projectile speed enhancement... very noticeable on battlefield missions where the aiming is way off - similar to the way off pic of terraziel above

Thanks!

* Finally found and fixed the issue that was causing some spells (most notably plasma bolt, but it applied to any of them, really) to be super inaccurate when fired at certain angles.
** The problem was that the spells were gradually accelerating to their full speed, and so when a spell had a high speed but lower acceleration the errors would compound and then either the spell would "bend" as it traveled, or it would just plain miss.
** This was also causing some oddness with enemy spells that were missing where the enemy was aiming, although that was less obvious to folks. This has been fixed so that now spells pretty much instantly accelerate to their max speed, whatever that speed is, and then retain all their accuracy.
** In practice this shouldn't affect much except that spells don't miss their targets anymore. It might also give you slightly less reaction time with a few enemy spells, but we don't think that any of them had a low enough acceleration paired with a high enough speed where that would make a material difference.
** Finally, when players were using shot speed enchants this problem was exacerbated, but this solution also fixes that issue.

Version 0.930 still suffers from this glitch. When equipped with a 40% projectile speed enhancement, aiming Energy Pulse at 30-45deg upwards results in the pulse being released in a much steeper angle (approx. 60deg upwards). When aiming vertically upwards or horizontally, the deviation is almost gone.

Note: it did not start a new world after 0.929. Perhaps this is required to eliminate the glitch?

Ok, I managed to get two screenshots which illustrate my observation. I am not sure if this is a bug or a feature. At least for my feeling the trajectory of the Energy Pulse in relation to the mouse reticle is odd.

You shouldn't have to restart any worlds. I did not test with energy pulse specifically, I was working with plasma bolt. I'll look and see what I can see with energy pulse.

Hmm. I can't get this to show myself... The only thing I see is that Energy Pulse isn't centered properly, but that happens at any speed. Could that be part of what you're seeing? Appending a screenshot (that I took at what I think was +81% projectile speed).

Yeah, I'm definitely not getting anything like the screenshots krieger posted even with a +93% enchant so there has to be something else going on.

Hmmm, okay. Will have to await more info, then. Possibly his version of the energy pulse graphic is out of date somehow; at one point it was noncentered, but then I believe I fixed that.

Some further observations: after taking away the speed enchant the misalignment is gone and appears again when it is put back to the left arm slot. I do not think it is due to a noncentred graphic because the effect varies with shooting angle. Just let me know if additional details are required.

Hmmm. What screen resolution are you playing on? About how far away would you say your cursor is from your character at the time you fire? Are you playing with any special options on, like the mouse cursor movement aiming thing?

Screen resolution is 1024x768. The discrepancy occurs regardless of chosing 1024x768 fullscreen or in in a window on the native 1440x1050 screen resolution of my laptop. The mouse cursor upon firing is just where it appears in the screenshots. I kept the mouse still and just pressed the fire (left) mouse button and then the PrtScrn key to make the screenshot (BTW: I run the game under Win7 64bit).

Regarding the special options: I am not aware that I changed anything from default apart from switching screen resolution and turning music off. Have to check back home.

Hmmm.... not sure what to do with that, as I can't duplicate. Will file it away for now, but without being able to duplicate it there's not much I can do. :/

Just checked: in the new version 0.932 the problem does not occur anymore...

Huh! That's very odd. Do you by any chance have an ATI card that was having framerate issues before? It could be that a bumpy framerate was causing its calculations to get uneven or something (that's not _supposed_ to be able to happen, but so it goes).
