Summary | 0007039: Random CSG Modifier
Description | A modifier (like Reveal Random AI Types) that makes Core Shield Generators randomized. The same planets are selected, but instead of putting an A with each ARS, a B with each Advanced Factory, and so on, they are placed randomly. I really like CSG, but I dislike being forced to capture 4 ARS every game. It doesn't even need to be fully random. It could just swap two letters, say B and C, or A and D. It could actually be interesting to get A's with Fabricators since I rarely take more than one currently.

Maybe for "vanilla" CSGs, the number of A generators you have to blow up can go down from 4 to 3, as you don't really need 4 bonus ships even on high difficulty levels. |
It just occurred to me that if an entire letter of CSG is swapped for another, it should always be A for something else. Swapping B and C or whatever would have no effect on the game at all. |

I thought the point of the CSG was to force the extreme minimal-AIP players to have to take more planets. The CSG's were then placed on planets that most regular players would want to take anyway so that they wouldn't be punished by the system and forced to take even more if they didn't want to. There's no downside to capturing ARS's - they don't "cost" you anything more than any other planet, and I think most players will want they anyway. If you don't want/need the extra bonus ship, you can always ignore it. I'm fairly completionist, though, and play a high AIP game, so I have a hard time making myself NOT capture things. But the few things I CAN resist taking are extra Factory IV's and duplicate Fabs. Putting the A's on the Fabs or the Factory IV's would force me to take a number of extra planets more than I already do, for stuff I am more likely to have no use for. |
Which is why I'm asking for an AI Modifier. Something you turn on in addition to CSG for when you get tired of always having A's on ARS systems. When I want a change of pace this option would make me try new things. At present unless I want to take 4 ARS systems every game, I need to turn off CSG and I'd rather not do that because I like how much they add to the game. TL;DR: This is NOT a change to how CSG work. This is an variant option for them that a player enables when they want to shake things up. |
Sorry, I missed the part about it being an option. I still don't get why you'd rather be forced to get a bunch of (potentially redundant) Fabs, though. |
For variety. It isn't something I'd be doing in 10/10 advanced hybrid games, but if I'm playing sub-8 games, odd and unexpected challenges keep things interesting. Since you mention it, maybe Fabs shouldn't duplicate. That would still leave the issue of getting A's on Advanced Factories which are completely redundant. The full randomization version would largely avoid both issues though, not that I'm really all that concerned with them. |
