Summary | 0006974: Keep unlocks going
Description | It turns out that once you have the variety of clearing out levels, finding stashes in buildings, and getting to a certain depth in a certain area, the unlock mechanic becomes 'magical'. It's really fun, and a wonderful change of pace from the other stuff. Essentially, it takes a certain category of quests you might get in an RPG: clear this area of baddies; scout this level etc and rewards you in a way that's unique to this game. I would hate to see unlocks disappear as you reach continent 5 or 10 or 15 or whatever, since they really are a quest type that's not captured by missions and they bring an excellent dynamic into the game. My idea is to take these unlocks and change them a little. The first unlocks would be predetermined as they are now, but after that, there would be random unlocks: random ingredients would be locked out in different continents. Some would be more essential, and some would be less essential, and that's the fun part. Now you need a narrative reason to bring unlocks back dynamically. My thinking is that it could be the overlord's actions. The overlord hoards certain resources randomly, stripping them from areas where they should be, in his attempts to stop you. The Illari can release those resources, but only if you accomplish this thing for them. Of course, the thing you do doesn't have much to do with getting those resources back, but it's something to do, and the Illari are mysterious beings... This also gives the overlord something new to participate in.

I really like this idea. I remember how fun it was a few versions ago being forced to use different spells when not every continent was guaranteed to have all terrain types. But, this had lots of other problems, hence the new guarantee. But re-locking certain ingredients could be the perfect solution. |

I think that something like this could be interesting, but bear in mind one thing in particular: we're going to be adding new unlockables constantly as we further develop the game. So by the time you're at continent 5 or 10, the game will hopefully have tons of more unlockables. Two years from now, I expect to have 1-2k unlockables, for instance. This is also one of those features that would be exciting to have a huge batch of as part of an expansion, too. I feel like we can get a stronger result with these by making them hand-crafted and one-time rather than something that is repeated or procedural, but we'll just have to see how it evolves. |
