Summary | 0006786: High flying eagle in meteor defense mission
Description | I just had a meteor defense mission where an eagle spawned as one of the enemies, and it decided to just fly a path across the top of the screen endlessly, so that when all the meteors were gone I still wasn't winning until I built a giant tower of crates to get up to him. Either the mission could end when the meteors are done falling, or eagles could just not spawn in these missions. Or we could just build more crate towers, I suppose.

IMO eagles need a better AI than flying horizontally forever. But in so far as this particular mission, they are quite harmless as is. |

Thanks! * Eagles are now barred from being part of the supply depot meteor storm missions, because they wind up just flying around way high up where they are difficult to reach. |

khadgar: The point of these enemies is that's what they do. Though there is a diving type of eagle that moves on the Y axis a bit. These are a platformer-style staple of an enemy type. If you want actual AI that seems realistic in every enemy, all you get is a very homogeneous set of enemies. But if you look at Mario, Metroid, or a host of other games, most enemies at least partially ignore you and follow other rules about how they move and what they do. Heck, even look at most of the SHMUP games: most enemies fly in patterns and make no effort to hit you whatsoever, but they hit you all the time because there is a lot of stuff going on and the challenge for you comes from all the various forms of patterns rather than from strategy-game-style AI tactics. But that varies by enemey, and the point isn't that ALL of the enemies should lack true AI, but that many of them should: you need all kinds in a game like this, not just one or the other will do. |
