Summary | 0000592: Transports Select with Military
Description | Transports will get selected with other military units, leading them to attempt to load into each other when a load transport command is given. On the other hand, I do like that I can select a bunch of units, load a transport and then tell the transport to go somewhere without needing to select them. But I'd prefer if they wouldn't select and move around while I'm trying to load them.

Well, they can't read your mind, though. ;) |
No, you can't. I'm just saying, "its nice, but I'd prefer the old method." But a modifier key could be used to get this effect. |
Yep, I'm not sure why this changed, it shouldn't have. |
Okay, I finally had a chance to check this out, and I can't reproduce it. Transports don't select with military, and never have to my knowledge. If you hold Ctrl, though, it does cause all units to be selected under the drag box without the normal non-military-exclusion logic. This isn't new either, it's all been that way since pre-1.0. I'm guessing that perhaps Ctrl was accidentally held down in this case, leading to unexpected behavior, or something along those lines. At any rate, all should be well. :) |
It wasn't ctrl, the issue is that if you had a transport selected (as a result, say, of loading or unloading one) and you try to select military, you get all the other transports along with the military ships. It makes transport loading somewhat more awkward than it needs to be, and didn't happen under the SlimDX versions. |

Could be that x4000's playstyle is to deselect current ships first before selecting new, in which case he'd never encounter this. On a related note, the same 'problem' with selection seems to happen with other things too, I think. For instance, if there's a utility ship, like MRS or Engineer selected, and you then select (dragging a selection box with left mouse button, no other keys pressed) will also select any non-military ships as well. Basically, any time you want to select only military ships, you have to deselect whatever you currently have selected, to make sure you don't get non-military ships included in the new selection. While it's been a while since I played 3.0, I think this wasn't the case back then. CTRL was always needed if you wanted to select non-military with a dragging box, with the only exception being selections that have no military ships in them. As I see it, not having CTRL or Shift selected should basically mean that your selection is "deselect old"+"select new, military only". Holding Shift would mean you want to skip the "deselect old" function, and holding CTRL means you want to select everything, not just military ships. So, currently, you have a very common scenario where you can select non-military ships with military ships, without holding CTRL. I've gotten somewhat used to it, but I still make mistakes, because AI War is the only RTS game requiring to deselect current units to make sure the new selection functions consistently. It's inconvenient, and I can see how it affects transports too. I haven't yet used transports in 4.0, but I can imagine it being somewhat annoying. |
Yes, that probably is the behavior. If you reselect a group of selected units it will select ALL mobile units in that selection. I suppose its supposed to make for a double-select-everything shortcut, but I think it just gets in the way. |
Yup. I only find it somewhat useful when I have a blob with stuff like MRS, Engineers or scouts in it. I drag over the blob twice and get everything selected. However, I could also just hold CTRL and do one drag, to get the same result. |
I really wish there was an option in settings to disable the "double-drag" auto-select. It's extremely annoying and I was surprised to find there was no way to turn it off. Especially since, individually, each planet will remember what units were selected before you leave, it is so easy to come back to a planet and not remember you had some units clicked before you left, and in selecting them all again, move a ton of things you don't want. |
