Summary0005670: Add progressive disclosure of the map
Description[One of a few I will log around continent mechanics, will link them together afterward. I don't expect these for 1.0]

I liked the vortex pylon mechanic that was in a while back. It added some variance in how to make progress in the game. While I'm not wedded to that particular mechanic, something that requires me to achieve a goal to unlock visibility into part of the map is something I'd like to see.

It would also give opportunity for more interplay between the strategic aspect of the game (Construct x in your settlement so you can find y missions for access to z).

I'm explorer/builder/completionist, if you can't tell :-).

Vortex pylons might be coming back, but beyond that no exploration mechanics on the world map itself are coming. The world map is about planning and choice, and in some respects is a glorified menu. Any sort of gating that we put on the world map itself has to be carefully weighed (for instance, we have ocean tiles), because those can get in the way of other larger considerations that we have planned for the macrogame. A lot of that won't be coming until post 1.0 anyhow, but if we start gating off the world map a lot then there won't be enough room for what we want to do later.

In terms of the general gating and exploration mechanics, the side view is where that sort of thing is something of interest. And I do have a desire to have things like locked doors that you have to get some sort of special artifact to later unlock, and things of that nature. But that's in the side view.

I really wasn't trying to shut you down on all those, it's nothing personal as I hope you know -- it's just that I have a rather specific vision for where the world map is headed, and it doesn't really fit with the general line of design thought that you were pursuing. All good things in time!

Yup, no worries. I expected pretty much what I got, just always impressed with your speed :-) I like that you're okay with me dropping my random thoughts in as well, nothing personal wrt design of your game as I hope you know ;-)
