Summary0005669: Increase tiers or otherwise gate access to "farther" regions and "deeper" dungeons
Description[One of a few I will log around continent mechanics, will link them together afterward. I don't expect these for 1.0]

Right now I can pretty much roam around the map anywhere -- which doesn't feel right for the style of game. For example, the "reach depth n" unlocks are all achievable at Tier 1, which means I can do a lot of things before advancing tiers.

I'd like to see something along the lines of RegionTier = max(CurrentTier, distance) -- so advancing tiers allows me to go to newer places (besides continents). It also means I can't wander up to the overlords house right away. And presumably I could venture into a higher tier for some reward.
Gating/map unlock could also be achieved by requiring some spell/guardian scroll/special mission. I'm sure there are many options here.

The overlord region is already tier 5 at all times, and the lieutenant regions are always tier 4 at all times. Beyond that, what you're suggesting is something that we've already done (for most of the history of this game), and it's been something incredibly distasteful in the end. It causes no end of balance problems and just didn't feel right -- I enumerated my reasoning for that at length in the release notes when we moved to the tier system.

Deeper caverns will have increasing tiers, however, so that part is something that was already planned (and we thought we'd already implemented, but it was apparently an oversight).
