Summary | 0000513: Rare ore deposits | ||||
Description | A.I. War runs on three resources: metal and crystal, which are stockpiled, and energy, which is just a floating pool. All ships, turrets, etc. are built from metal and crystal. Lore-wise it's probably assumed that different alloys are synthesized or fabricated from "metal" and "crystal" - aluminum and titanium for ship skins, steel or titanium for frames, iron or tungsten for bullets, different laser-focusing crystals, etc. It would be easier if the humans could find sizeable deposits of such things as opposed to scavenging and refining scrap, especially in the case of the stranger ship types that would require more and more unusual components. Idea: some systems (ideally, resource-low ones - I rarely have the urge to capture a planet with 1 metal and 0 crystal) have asteroid belts/large floating deposits of specialized metals. Capturing these deposits and feeding them with energy would allow the player to mine them, giving a discount of X percent on certain shiptypes based on the material in question. Teleporting ships like telestations and teleraiders require large amounts of... uh, let's call it "teleportanium" in their Telereactors (or whatever, work with me here). Capturing a Teleportanium deposit could offer a discount on those ships. Raiders and space planes require high amounts of aluminum to keep their weight low, allowing for quick speeds with an oversized engine: find and conquer an Aluminum deposit to make those shiptypes cheaper! You can come up with more and more examples, I think the basic idea's clear enough. I think this would add a possible incentive to go after planets you'd otherwise avoid because of the potential AIP increase, adding another tactical decision for players to make. If that's not enough, perhaps a boost in AIP when captured (as opposed to when destroyed) could act as a further balance? The bonus probably shouldn't apply to the base fighter/bomber/cruiser triangle unless it was part of a possible "global" bonus (very, very small; think on the order of 1-2% maybe?) since those are so useful and common. Aside: I'm not sure if shiptype gains from Advance Research Stations are pre-determined or not; if not, the deposit type probably shouldn't be unveiled/selected until captured, to insure that the player gains a bonus they can actually use - no use in a Liquid-State Crystal bonus for Zenith Mirrors if I never unlock any...
