Summary | 0005053: Optional Boss Idea
Description | As per http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,9411.msg86589.html, I am posting this idea here, with some revisions. 1. It should be a very tough fight. Possibly always a few levels above you, regardless of chunk level. (All suggested values assume the boss always overlevels you by some fixed amount of levels. If one is allowed to overlevel it, suggested values should be if you overlevel it by 8 or somewhere around there) 2. Crazy HP, enough to make 30 minutes to defeat be considered a very best case scenario. 3. It should do good damage. Enough to take you out in 6-8 hits (if one is allowed to overlevel it, 8-12 shots at 10 levels over) 4. Will every now and then use spells/attacks that can inflict debuffs (freeze and/or burn and/or other debuffs yet to be introduced) 5. Will auto-regen at a SLOW rate compared to its max HP, which considering how high its max HP will be, still VERY noticeable regen. The regen can only kick in after 10-30 seconds of not being hit, just to make the boss possible, but to stop one from hitting until low on health and then running to a corner for a few minutes. 6. You will be allowed to leave the room, heal up, and then come back. Yea, the boss will probably regen a little by the time you do all that, but rather that than die. 7. Will be OPTIONAL. This would be too close to grind if a player would be forced to fight it. This boss is for an epic side-quest. I'm not sure how optional bosses and optional side quests would be implemented, or even if this kind of game supports such things, but I thought this idea was worth a mention. As always, values may need to be adjusted for balance.

This idea is unashamedly plagiarized off of Final Fantasy XII's Yiazmat. Just to give you an idea of how insane he was, he had 50 million HP in a game with a 9999 damage cap. The world record for beating him is around 40 minutes. |
Yeah, I like this idea. |
I guess this would mean implementing a tier of bosses higher than overlords. Overoverlords? |
EpicLords? |
Well overlords don't strike me as the baddest of the bad really. The impression I get from overlords are more like awful tyrannical monsters but in the end they're just after power/money/resources. I think there would still be room for greater evils in the world, creatures that just want to cause suffering, pain and disruption. Perhaps they might even be hostile to overlords (or any other living being)...so there could be room for some interesting "the enemy of my enemy is my friend situations" |
Overlords are just that: supreme rulers of lands. I imagine THIS sort of thing to be an outside player, ruler of nothing, but absolutely badass. |
I WAS a bit disappointed to venture into the Deeps and not actually find any of the 'Dark Illari' in the description... :-P |
I'm not opposed to the idea necessarily, but the description sounds mind-numbingly boring and tedious. There needs to be more to it than just doing the same thing for half an hour without screwing up, or else it turns into a situation where you just WANT it to kill you to put you out of your misery. If there are different stages/phases to the fight or something to keep it interesting, that helps a lot. It also gives some way to tell you're making progress against something with such an absurd amount of hp that you'll never actually see the health bar move. |
@naglas Yea, that is something that Yiazmat (the inspiration for this boss) sort of failed miserably. He had only like 5 attacking moves, and used mostly the same strategy throughout the fight. OK, sure, he started using his more deadly abilities more frequently as his health went down, and he gave himself some nasty buffs at certain points of the fight, but his battle strategy was mostly the same. There is one interesting variation he did. At one point, he casts relectaga (puts reflect on all party members) on your party. The reasoning behind this is that he hopes to snag some healing spells or buffs that were meant for your team. That's pretty much it though. Introducing multiple stages/forms to the boss seems like a good idea to add variety while still keeping the longevity. For the health bar thing, Final Fantasy XII solved it as follows. For high HP bosses, there are two HP bars. The lower one is separated into Current_HP/HP_Interval (rounded down) chunks, while the higher HP bar is Current_HP % HP_Interval, where HP_Interval is a value based on the enemy type. More concretely, Yiazmat's HP_Interval was 1,000,000. His Max_HP was 50,000,000. What this would mean is that the top bar shows how far along you are in the current million HP chunk (which represents a small enough HP to have visible movement), while the bottom bar (which starts at 50 chunks) shows you how many more million HP chunks you have left. It's a pretty elegant solution IMO. Yikes, that was a lot of text. |
