Description | I feel like the battles are pretty much about dodging the enemies attacks and that would be more fun if you could crouch. However to prevent players from "abusing" it or put a stone on the crouch-button the player shouldn't be able to move while crouching (or very slowly) but keep some of the speed it had before so you can POWERSLIDE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zhe8eZ0Img | ||||

+1 crouching mechanics. It would add a little more strategy to projectile dodging outside of just jumping away. +9001 for power sliding. I want to be Megaman. |

While I agree that being able to crouch might add something to the game, Chris has said that anything that adds further animation to the characters is going to have to wait, if it gets done at all. This is because of the way the sprites are done, adding further animations would be a LOT of work. |

Is the pick-up animation not suitable? |

That probably would work, yes, although I'm not sure how keen I am on the whole crouching thing. I'm more keen to experiment with the upcoming shield mechanics first. |

Yeah I would think the pick-up frame would work. For sliding though I'm not sure. Maybe rotate the falling pose and then just hide the legs with a flashy particle effect. But I guess this is something to bring up later, since it's closed already. |

Now that this is reopened (man, these guys work fast): I'd be totally in favour of crouching (although sliding I'll take or leave) but am willing to wait and see how we get on with the shields and whatnot first, for sure! |

@x4000 but you can still jump? I mean....its just the opposite? Why jump the height of 2 houses if you just can crouch? However I don't know how the shield mechanic will work so I guess we'll have to try it out first. |

Jumping is fun, and helps you get around the world. Ducking possibly requires new art, possibly doesn't, and likely isn't going to actually let you dodge anything because the enemies aim for your center of mass and in most cases that means their spells would still clip the top of you even while you're ducking. There would be exceptions, but I imagine the most this would accomplish is flurry of bug reports about how people are still getting hit while ducking. ;) |

I think crouching has a place tactically. When you're on a raised ledge or pile of crates, and giant bots are throwing fireballs at you at an angle, right now your only option is to run away and run back. Crouching would be nice here to duck under the fireballs. |

Alternatively, to powerslide (megaman style?) through one-block-high openings. Currently there seem to be barely any natural ones, but e.g. one tile high openings due to broken crates would be an example of this. Also heavily applies to Skelebots who are too tall to fit through many openings. Could be a spell with a similar effect, though. |

* It is now possible to duck, and make your character a 40% shorter target by doing so. You can only duck when on the ground, and you can't move while ducking. ** So no crawling along, and no Mario-2-style ducking and jumping through the air as a tiny target. If you want that sort of mobile smallness, you want the miniature spell. ** If you duck, enemies will adjust their aim to hit you while you're ducked -- bear this in mind. So the best way to effectively duck is to stand until the enemy fires at you, then duck to actually avoid the shot. This gives you time to dodge but not them time to adjust their aim if you then stand right back up after the shot. |

Also: * Made it so that not only does ducking conserve your momentum a bit, but also it reduces your deceleration by 80%. Thus you can get some interesting sliding action, especially if you combine this with Storm Dash. |

Thanks! So does this mean that shrink is no longer bound to the down button? For OP, if you don't know it check out the shrink spell; it's an easy unlock and makes you smaller to avoid things. But normal crouching and powersliding are great additions! By the way, for X --- I think crouching will add a lot; I find I want it a lot when standing behind half-cover. |
