Summary0004395: Monster nests
DescriptionThe current rampaging monsters attacking every X turn gets a bit boring after a while. The monsters is the same level as the PC which takes away the feeling of progression. When your civ level goes up you want those rampaging monsters to be a minor threat.

So, instead of spawning monsters randomly, place monster nests around the world. A nest have a chance to spawn rampaging monsters each turn. Those monsters will have their level based on the level of the nest.

A nest may also level after some time, but not as fast as the PC.

A nest may be entered and the boss of the nest may be killed. This will destroy the nest, making them no longer pose any threat.

A nest will only attack settlements within a certain distance. This distance increases when the population of the settlement goes up.

Eventually, if the settlement becomes to large it will get attention from the lieutenants, and maybe even overlord, who will start to spawn attacking monsters. (Shamefully ripping of AI War)

There is a very small chance a new nest is spawned each turn.

It would provide a feeling of completion for an area, kill the overlord, build up the town, and prevent all the raids, and I would feel like I have 'saved' a town (or region), and ready to move on to the next. For a heroic character anyway. However long term I would also like to be able to do 'evil' acts, maybe an option for joining an overlord and switching sides, what does anyone think?

Yes, that is what thought. Being able to wipe out small threats while inviting more people to the settlement will increase the threat.

Usually they want to separate different ideas to different mantis issues, so maybe you should do that. :)

I like the idea, a lot. But you don't mention anything about the initial level of those nests. I guess the region level they spawn in should at least influence it. Making the ones further away more dangerous. But we don't want level 10+ monsters attacking us right off the bat...

Snelg: Oupps, missed to say it. Anyway, you can't access the strategy map until level 3, so the initial nests could be level 3 nests.

And as you said, region level should influence it. :)

Can rampaging monsters cross vortices? If not, that would be a good fit with this mechanic; it would add a strategic dimension to clearing pylons --- you get more territory to explore, but risk having to fight off higher-level monsters.

I'm all for anything which increases tactical side of the Strategic map.

Haven't played with the vortices yet, but I think this is a good idea :)

Because rampaging monsters are the same level as the PC they're easy enough to fight with and maximize your exp.
So You can just end turn fighting with them until You get to next tier level.

One interesting situation was when they attacked from region of level +20 higher then mine. I had to let them into village, because std region monsters were too strong for me...
