Summary | 0004269: Potential Exploit -- Launch Rock + long distance boss health visibility
Description | Frequently I have an imbalance of healing/mana potions in my inventory. I've been thinking a bit about the balance between health and mana, and when I can trade one for the other. With trash mobs, for example, I can use ranged spells, burn mana and save health. Or I can jump through them, occasionally get hit, but conserve mana. So that works pretty good. Against a boss, I can save mana and burn health by getting up close and personal. It's harder to save health and burn mana -- with most spells it seems reasonably balanced between standoff and melee. With the Launch Rock spell though -- that doesn't seem to have a range limit. As long as I can get sufficiently above an enemy, which is not difficult to do, I can lob rocks at the now offscreen boss and tell whether I'm hitting or not by watching the boss's health. I've done this successfuly about a half dozen times now that it's become a dominant tactic when I'm low on health. A player is going to be more agile than the bosses (except those that can travel through solid objects like the bats -- or if you add teleporting enemies, hmm), so it'll be easy to stay far enough away even if pathfinding is improved. Not sure what the right fix is -- some thoughts: 1) When a boss is offscreen, show a pointer rather than full details. Doesn't solve the 'spray and pray' problem 2) Increase the mana cost of launch rock significantly -- but would break balance when used appropriately 3) Limit the range of Launch Rock 4) Make bosses immune to offscreen attacks (varying screen resolutions make this difficult to balance right -- I remember playing Diablo in 800x600 and you could see enemies before they were activated) 5) Rocks become unstable after some distance (conservation of energy, you can only hold them together for so long) and their damage diminishes with range 6) Other ideas?
