Summary0004250: Allow exit to map from either end of surface areas
DescriptionJust what it says. I can't think of any reason why the world suddenly ends at an impassable cliff face at the end of each surface area. Why not just put another transition back to the world map at the end, so that when you've explored through an entire surface area you aren't faced with either wasting a warp scroll, which you'd rather use for returning from deep caves and other maze-like areas, or running back overland for several minutes?

That would be a nice idea, but how would be made the choosing of the edge entrance? The edge you exit, the edge you come back?

There's always a node 1, which could be where you always enter. It's where you always enter now, after all.

I think the fear is that this might lead to some confusion from new players. But it's worth considering, for sure.

I could see that possibility. Perhaps a message at the end of the level that pops up and says 'exit to world map y/n?' when you cross that last transition point. Or coloring it differently on the minimap so you know it's an exit transition and not a next area transition. It's only confusing the first time until you figure out how the maps work and can see where you are. And in the long run, I'd much rather see the game balanced around convenience for long term players, rather than momentary confusion for new players.

Though I can see some merit in this, you do realize that you can warp back, right? No one needs to do all that walking through areas they've been in before.

If you're doing a lot of warping around caverns and such and therefore carry more than two warp scrolls, warping has a nonzero cost. I don't feel strongly either way, but I can see how it could be useful.

Understood, and I actually mentioned that in the original report. It just feels like a bit of a waste. It's not like it takes that long to to get back, and it's not very dangerous to travel over land, since it's usually quite easy to dodge most surface monsters. It leads to a non-interesting choice between using scarce scroll making resources for convenience vs. saving resources and paying for your return in the form of a rather dull jog back across lands you've already explored.

Especially with the way you get warp potions now, I think this is a non-issue. I feel like having the world map so easily reachable on foot at either end of the surface sections would make it feel very small, and not like you were getting deeper into the wilderness, personally.
