Summary | 0003453: Digging caves.
Description | There totally needs to be a kind of cave where there is sand that can be blasted away block-by-block. This would be top-colliding only, and enemies would be walking around in there. In short, it's straight out of Mario 2, but it's a crime that that mechanic hasn't been used more. And doing so with ranged spell weaponry like in AVWW? That's pretty new. :)

I think destructible terrain has been done recently, actually ;) |
No, this is very different, actually -- the Mario 2 desert/digging underground levels are much different in feel from anything on the market recently. You'll see what I mean. :) |
I remember the Mario 2 sandcaves, basically you stood on top of a sand block and pressed the jump button while holding down (or whatever it was to pick up an object that was under you) and the character would "pick up" the block of sand which would thus instantly dissolve and you'd fall down into its place. Did I remember that correctly? Anyway, that feels very much like just taking a pick and hacking my way through it, which is exactly what I did in Terraria a few nights ago. But either way it sounds fine :) |

Well, okay -- maybe Terraria also did this. You remembered the general flow of this, but there are three key differences between this and anything else I've run into: 1. You can walk through the levels of sand you are currently on without digging them, and can jump to higher ones. You only have to dig if you want to go down and there isn't already a hole on your current level. 2. The digging is heavily constrained to corridors of solid rock that you can't go through. So rather than being freeform exploration, it's an alternate travel method through what would otherwise be a boringly empty mostly-vertical shaft. 3. There are enemies that are walking around in here, following the same rules as you about how they traverse the sand. And they are VERY difficult to kill, so you mostly have to avoid them. And since none of them dig, they have a tendency to follow your own paths. So, the end result is that this becomes something that is a minor bit tactical: you have to plan out your routes in such a way that you can make your way down without having enemies rain down on top of you. And there were some other twists thrown in there with snifits in particular (jumping up row by row, shooting bullets that also bounce down at you, complicating things). Anyway, I plan to do something like that, specifically, which is a lot more interesting than just the ability to dig. And I hope to add more tactical variance and interest with more enemy types and obstacles, etc. |
Note to self: this is going to be the chief mechanic of the desert -- anywhere you want to go down into, you have to DIG. Though there would be some air pockets, etc. So that's going to make exploring caves in the desert a really different affair than anywhere else. |
