Summary0003092: LotS Shard Spawning and Superfortresses
DescriptionI've got a game where the first shard spawned on a mk3 world with a superfortress, and the fastest route back to my homeworld is through another mk3 planet with a mk2 fortress AND a superfortress. This should probably be added in to the shard spawning logic as a no-no.

(As a little funny bit, the alternate route is one of two mk3 planets, one with Dyson Sphere, and then another mk3 planet with a fortress)

A really quick note to ArcDM: do you really want to have to chew through a billion (or more) HP worth of Fortresses alone to retrieve the Signal Transceiver shard? A single superfortress is 750 million HP with 80,000x120 shots w/ 6 second reload. 3,200,000 DPS at 53k range on a mk3 planet that you have to secure for 5 minutes at least, and if you somehow manage to complete the survey without destroying the superfort then the superfort is going to nuke that shard as soon as it shows up. That's a serious nightmare.

The LotS campaign is an optional quest in addition to the normal 'take back the galaxy' quest that you already start on. In the story the mysterious object that you must retrieve was there regardless of what the AI had been doing.

You were dealt a difficult scenario but these kinds of serious obstacle are to be expected to be seen once in a while. This is not a impossible situation, just very difficult and tedious.

The biggest point is that LotS is entirely optional, you can still complete the game. Yes that is not the option you would like but the game will force variety upon the player simply because of random scenarios like the one you have encountered.

Also, are there any other routes that you could take? Despite how long they might be they are also possible.

If you could provide a save, I'm sure a few other people would like to take a whack at it.

I'll post a save from the beginning up later maybe.

And yes, I know LotS is optional, but they're already not seeding the shard on mk4 planets, or making it run through mk4 planets, for the early shard seedings. It seems like superfortresses should be included because they're waaaay more dangerous than mk4 planets (and don't even require supply). Usually I don't choose the LotS campaign anyway, but for someone else to get an hour (or three) into the game and then run into this when they want to do LotS would be pretty frustrating.

Aside from the route already mentioned that has to go through its own fortress, getting the shard back to my homeworld would involve in excess of 10 jumps - all the aforementioned fortresses are in kind of a choke point.

While this is painful for the player, I'm not going tell it to consciously avoid this sort of thing. It may mean that you have to wait until later to recover the shard, which has other implications for the challenge of the scenario... but that's just how the different aspects of the game seeding go. The concession to not send you through mkIV planets was about the limit of how far I was willing to go in making it "be nice" ;)

By the way, were you facing a fortress baron, or do you know?

Yeah, it was a fortress baron and N Youngster. I have seen superfortresses pop up outside of being used by Fortress Barons though, I might be able to dig up some saves for that kind of thing. Then again, that might have just been me getting really really unlucky with the Trader (which is always on).

I looked through the code earlier and it is actually seeding what looks like 1 or 2 superforts in each game, not sure. But the fortress baron has a lot more of them.

Alright, cool. As I said, I don't really have a problem with superforts in general, I kind of like the challenge they pose. I'd just hate for someone without my tolerance to have to quit after 3 hours of gameplay because they wanted to do Fallen Spire and can't knock out the superfortress to get started.
