Summary | 0003011: "Auto Gather Knowledge" setting will not protect research stations if gathering finished while shield is moving
Description | When a research station is set to "Auto Gather Knowledge" it will seek saftey under a shield on a planet. I move shields around during play. I've noticed two behaviors in this situation 1) The research station will wait until it is unshielded before moving under cover. This leaves it exposed. 2) If the research station exhausts knowledge and there is no more knowledge to be gathered elsewhere in the galaxy, it stops moving, even if the shield it was following leaves. Repro: 1) Build research station, set to 'auto gather' 2) Exhaust research 3) Build shield in enemy system via mobile builder 4) Take enemy system 5) Wait for research station to move underneath the shield 6) Move the shield a long distance (Sufficient that knowledge gathering finishes before the shield completes movement) Expected: 1) Research station remains under the shield (close to center) 2) When research exhausts, research station continues to move with the shield Actual: 1) Research station only moves after it has been out of the shield for a period of time 2) Research station stops moving after knowledge is exhausted.

They don't seek shields, they just go next to the command station to my knowledge. |
Sorry to reopen -- the stations definately seek cover, I have seen this in every game I have tried since 5.0 (I wasn't aware of the command in 4.0). If you don't want to fix it, that's fine, just want to make sure you have the right info :-) |
Yes, they do seek cover (preferring being near a command station, but they'll take a different ff if that's all there is), no, they don't keep constantly checking for whether they're covered, and when they run out of places to find knowledge they go kind of dormant. It's just a simple automation command to handle simple situations where your science labs aren't in much danger (and/or you don't mind losing them). But thanks for letting us know :) |
And actually they do recheck that they're covered, but they don't do it preemptively because the ff is moving, etc, which is what I think you were saying. |
Yup, that was my intent -- thanks for double checking. -Ian |
