Summary | 0028434: Make in game text thematically consistent.
Description | The game is presented as you are playing as an AI and doing AI things, but all of the in game text is written as if, my buddy is sitting next to me and just casually telling me his interpretation of game systems/game events. "Oh don't worry just kill that guy it's not important." Every time I read in game text I lose the feel of being an ai, and get a jarring transition back to reality of a human playing a game. I'm not sure about the spoiler policy in the bug tracker so here is a quick rough draft rewrite I did of a very early encounter in game. “….Nickelbot - it's combat readiness is low, comparable to a human soldier. You utilize the short range low frequency network to push your own subroutines into the bot and assume control. Your selves exit the building.” Not the best but the point is to illustrate how the text can be rewritten to come off as it is the thoughts/insights of the AI that the player is playing as. Rather than someone sitting next to me just telling me stuff and things. I have a lot more suggestions in this realm but will end here.

I'm not rewriting the game, no. This is the AI talking to itself. I'm really pleased with how it's written, and it's written exactly how I mean to write it. I get your point of view, but that's some other game. This game is about a new person who just woke up to being a person, and every last piece of information you get is filtered through their own perception. They are alternatively scared and bored, and they cope with some mild humor. And they are talking to themselves, so they are very casual. |
|
To clarify: every piece of text in the game is written in the voice of the AI, talking to itself. Except the settings menus. I am a huge fan of the Murderbot Diaries, and other stories where artificial intelligences or other synthetic beings have actual personality. Velocity Weapon is another good series, though it starts slow. Ancillary Justice as a trilogy, and the list goes on. The thoughts and lives of artificial beings don't have to be dry and lifeless. |
