Summary | 0002695: Spirecraft Maintainer
Description | A spirecraft that is a bit like an MRS but self-damages for a percentage of the damage healed on other units. It'd have a decent chunk of health and repair quickly but unlike a forcefield its protegés would be vulnerable to concentrated fire. Direct attacks on the maintainer would of course deplete its health faster than damaging ships around it but would have less effect on the fleet's firepower. It's a way of carrying limited healing power into hostile territory without having the infinite healing powers of engineers or MRSes. Also it'd be significantly more expensive (both in resources and of course the opportunity cost of the asteroid) than either. It can also act as a weaker replacement for a regenerator unit to maintain fleet strength at the cost of its own health. It's immune to repairs and doesn't self-regenerate so it shouldn't be thrown in with every army nilly-willy, only when repairs in hostile territory are really needed. It could support deep strike forces for a while but once it's used up they'd need reinforcements.

A spirecraft MRS would be a fairly balanced way to have the "old MRS." Especially if it self-damages to repair other units and not-repairable (but I would not have the AI priority target it, as then it'd be exactly like the old MRS except irreplaceable: that is, dead as soon as the AI sees it). |

Perhaps make it able to trade health with unrepairable Spire Ship, like the Martyr. Martyrs cant be repaired nor do they heal themselves, in some cases they survive in an almost useless state (eg: 1% health, the wormhole post may kill it if you slip it in AI-terf), which isnt really an issue, but it would be nice if there would be some costly way to repair some existing ships like this. |
