Summary | 0002450: Space Docks etc should increment the ship counter when building starts, instead of when it finishes.
Description | Currently, when a space dock or similar builds a ship, the ship counter increments at the end of construction. This is bad! It causes multiple space docks with the same ship in their queue to all build at once, and then cancel them when the ship cap is reached. This has two problems: 1. while you're waiting for the excess ships to cancel, your yards are not building other ships in their queue; 2. it takes up a lot more resources, so if you hit the floor you'll be spending many, many times longer to produce a single ship than if you only had one space dock producing that ship class. 2a. Even worse, I don't know what happens to resources spent on projects that get cancelled. If they are even partially lost, it's an even greater waste of resources! The solution is to, instead of incrementing at the end of construction, increment at the beginning: this way, only as many ships as can fit under the cap will be built, and those ships will use up less resources and let other ships get built too. In the attached file, there are five starship constructors. Four of them are building flagships! Never mind that you can only ever have three flagships, and there are two more out in the world. You can find the existing flagships at Cece, and the constructors making more at Tiofo, Venius, Uzslovko, and Ladmzor.

Unfortunately, that would be really difficult, and would likely lead to a lot of other uninstwnded side effects. It also really only matters for very large ships like starships. In those cases, you're better off having fewer constructors with more engineers, and/or one constructor only per each type. There's really rarely a need for four starship constrictors, honestly, as one starship constructor with three or four engineers is faster and more efficient all around (engineers give speed boosts, cost less energy to operate, etc.). |
