Summary | 0002180: removing an expansion with no license key does not disable trial mode in host screen
Description | I installed AIW and the first 2 expansions from Steam and entered the license keys. It still said something about Trial in the upper right, so I figured I needed to update. I ran the update (to 4.057), which automatically closed the game. I opened the game again and it still said 4.057Trial. I eventually figured out that I needed to disable the newest expansion. I then tried to host a game and found that it was still showing me as being in trial mode in the pre-game lobby, despite not showing this on the main page. This remained true until I restarted the game, on advice from someone in the IRC channel. There is some sort of UI problem here. A passel of them, really. 1) Should say why it's in trial mode. 2) Should say that you need to restart, if a restart is needed to change which expansions are in use. 3) Should not have different text on the main screen and in the pre-game lobby - either it's in trial mode or it isn't. One of those screens was lying to me. This has set my expectations for the game pretty low, 'cause damn was that ever confusing and annoying. Since that's one of the first things that new users see, I think this should be given fairly high priority to fix.

I think the first problem was that it wasn't clear that you were downloading a beta update (4.057 is a beta). Or did you see that? But yes, there is a known issue with it updating the "am I in trial mode" flags when you disable a trial expansion, and we will be fixing that before the next official release in January. The actual problem is (iirc) present in the previous official version but you don't really notice it unless you actively choose to get the trial version of an expansion. The problem did not exist in previous official versions because it cropped up during our port of the game from the old .NET/SlimDX engine to Unity3D. Anyway, thanks for letting us know (we did know about it, but better multiple times than not at all), and I hope you find the rest of the experience more pleasing :) |

Yeah, I wasn't sure how to make the initial trial mode flag go away after entering the keys, which is why I tried the update button. I did see that it was a beta - that was clear. Thanks for the quick response. Glad to hear that a fix is planned. |

Just checked in a fix for this in 4.058; though Chris might already be in the process of sending that one out so maybe it will be for 4.059. Soon, in any event :) Thanks for the reminder of how this was impacting the very-early experience of new customers. We tend to get focused on other stuff :) |
