Summary0002178: AI Strategic Assault Node
DescriptionThe idea here is somewhere between a raid engine and a hybrid. Less of a realtime-tactical focus than the latter, but with a broader impact than the former.

Some number of these nodes are scattered on Mark IV/core planets. When a node is triggered, it will send a strategically-oriented wave (along the lines of the hybrid attack logic) at the player every half an hour, with 10 mins or so of warning. These should be maybe the size of three or four standard waves, but probably smaller than a CPA (as they're more precisely targeted). I imagine there could be several types of nodes that would send different types of attacks, such as triangle ship nodes, golem/spirecraft nodes, starship nodes etc. I don't think the mark mechanic would translate well to these nodes. Rather, the ships they send should be dependent on the AIP.

I imagine that destroying them should carry some not-insignificant AIP cost. It is possible to just weather these waves, so it should remain a meaningful choice. 20-30, perhaps.

I have two ideas for how these could be triggered. They could be on a simple staggered timer, starting some time into the game (set up so that multiple nodes means waves more frequently, not multiple ones at the same time). Alternatively, each one could have a few beacons scattered around the galaxy. These could be work as on-capture triggers that would start up the corresponding node. As a twist, one could make them warpgates that are not destroyed when the planet is captured (it would be especially neat if they sent out the same type of ships), with an independent wave timer (for balance, these should probably only be active when the planet is captured).

The idea is that this gives the player a three-fold choice: Blow the node itself, playing AIP cost, Ignore the triggers, dealing with small waves inside your defensive shell, or destroy the triggers and deal with large waves from outside it.

EDIT: Added my original intention that once triggered, the node sends waves repeatedly (roughly every half hour).
