Summary | 0000208: Starfield PNG's have too high density and too small distance between Stars
Description | Since the game uses 3 layers of the starfields and (i guess) loops them in their respective plane we have very nice pseudo-3d starfields. However, nearly all the starfield images have too high density of stars. They are OK for single layer use, but for 3 layers blending over them the density has to be decreased and distance between stars has to be increased (i would say, by factor 3 less stars each png generally). Also star colors are white/blue/orange/red so each layer should have (lightly, randomly) colored stars. Less dense, more diverse colors ;) Aesthetic bickering no doubt ^^

No bickering. I agree that the starfield is a bit too thick as it stands. |
|
Thirded. On my high resolution display there are so many stars that it nearly looks like a solid grey background. I wonder if perhaps something is wrong with the starfield generation/drawing on high resolutions that is causing it to be too thick? |
|
I'm running on a notebook and the starfield looks like a blizzard to me. I ran sparce on the old version. We must be in the center of the galaxy for this many stars to be visible at once ;) |

I found out why this issues occurs in the current starfield images ) Notice the attached file, left is my source sparse colored starfield from AI War (note that the colored starfield in AI War pre-unity was made my be me the new one is not ;p) with "levels" in Photoshop applied with following settings RGB 0 - 1,0 - 10 Output 0-255 Right is 1 random png from the game as they ship currently with same settings (though it could be a 15 instead of a 10 as it white outs very quickly ;p) Notice that the game png has a extreme amount of background noise which is what causes the problems. Its nearly invisible if you have it with certain combinations but when a nebula comes into play you can see it throw up sort of "fake" nebula extensions and splotches. Also Note that not all PNG's the game has have this noise, to quickly find which do, look at the file sizes - anything above 20kb is unnaturally large for a starfield image at 512x512. This however does not change the fact that stars are generally too dense and not colored properly ;P |

I'm not looking to make any changes to this at this time, I'm quite happy with it and sank a lot of time into it. We could have endless arguments about it, but I'm not inclined to do so at this time, and frankly there's just not time to address that at the moment even if I was. |
