Summary | 0002019: AI waves seem to really like ARS's
Description | I was playing with 2 7/7 AIs and a bomber wave arrived on a system with an ARS. The system had a logistics command station and an advanced research station. Interestingly the bombers went straight for the ARS to the exclusion of all else (at least until it was destroyed). I'm not sure if this is actually a bug, but it struck me as pretty exploitable as I could (and did) kite the bombers with the ARS forever while I picked them off with fighters (of course, they shot back too...). Why does the AI hate the ARS so? It seems like pretty much anything else in the system should be a higher priority (the ARS really isn't all that valuable to a player after it's been captured) and after I let them blow the ARS, it proceeded to attack other targets of opportunity in the system in an interesting fashion as I would expect.

Because it is command grade and bombers have a bonus against it. This is also why all ships don't target things like munitions boosters first. |
AND because the ARS is irreplacable. The AI has historically gone after targets that the humans can't replace (Ion Cannons, Mass Drivers, ARS, etc) before other things. |
Yeah, but it they are chasing a ship that they will never catch up with. It is bad AI to run around in a circle not catching their target while being destroyed by their counter. The AI also likes to go after colony ships sometimes and they do go after planetary armor boosters and such which they have zero chance of killing |
Been meaning to get around to this for a while, but it's now in there: * The AI now only has a 8% chance of swarming after "irreplaceable" units like ion cannons, ARSes, etc, rather than a 70% chance. ** The AI already has logic in place for valuing targets even beyond this, but much more flexible and less gap-in-the-wall type logic, so having this be very infrequent is good. However, still having it present is also good, so that occasionally the AI will mass their ships on a frontal assault on something valuable, always a good thing. |
