Summary0016949: Performance: Processing between turns - no indicator that something is happening
DescriptionProcessing betweens has become quite noticeable. However the game give minimal to no indication that processing is going on. Would it be possible to have some form of "Please Wait/Processing indicator on the main screen? It feels like the game is about to crash instead of it just being an issue of performance.

There's a setting to enable something like this if you want it.

I believe some more interturn performance work is planned closer to release time, so this should be less of an issue then.

There is an option for seeing exactly what is going on, but it flashes a bunch of text in general. We probably should make some sort of single-line bit of text for even when that's turned off, but in the meantime, more immediately, can you please upload your savegame that is getting slow? Slow interturns are something that we always want to look into.

Thanks!

I've attached the file from turn 102. This is my first game, so don't expect stellar strategy here. :)

This save is where the system starts get notably slow every time I select the end-of-turn button. I get the feeling the game is about to crash, but I seemed to be able to limp on.

My machine specs are:
- 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB DD3, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB running OSX 10.10.3.

Here's screen capture of the debug log.

On a related note. The wait between turns has another effect on me: Going from dead silence to an FX explosions several times in a row now has scared the bejezus out of me. I now have the sound completely off, because its giving me a nervous tick. :D

Whoa, 18 seconds? That's definitely unacceptable on any hardware, and yours should not be doing that. When I load up your save, I'm seeing it have turns in about 2.5 to 3 seconds at the moment.

That may be because of some changes I made in the next version that inherently lead to less processing on the part of the AI in some places, I'm not sure. I'd love to see how you are seeing turn times in the next version if they are still high, and then we'll go from there if that's so.

Turning the debug stuff back off will help in terms of it not slowing down for that, but that's useful as a general benchmark for sure.

Thanks!

So I'm at turn 77 and and its take 18 seconds to finish. This seem quite slow now. I've attached the game file and a quick screen grab.

Note I saw this start to slow around turn 70 this time. I only turned on debug at turn 77 to see what the time was. Very slow. :(

I've tested the three saves attached to this and the other similar mantis record and the interturn times are between 1 and 2 seconds for two of them, and around 3 seconds for the one with a bunch of saucer activity. So I think whatever was bogging it down has been dealt with in changes already made for the next version.

We've removed one of the debug toggles, but if you still see really-long-interturn-times in the next version then please retest with any remaining debug toggles set to off. It's helpful for us to know if it's the toggles or just the game itself :)

Thanks!
