Description | Got this inspiration from a documentary I was watching about U-boats and convoys during WWII. The Javelin Starship functions in a way similar to submarines and is of slim design. It is a niche Starship, designed for entering enemy territory undetected (ie, cloaked) and firing mid-to-long range high power torpedoes at single, large, high priority targets. Such targets are Starships, Heavy Defense, Special Forces outposts, and so on. Basically, surgical strikes against single targets. It's key weakness is that is is ineffective against multiple enemies, as its only weapon is the torpedo launcher, which itself has a longish reload time. Knowledge cost would be higher too, to balance its destructive power against key targets. I was thinking maybe a human only ship as well, as it might be too useful for the AI, as it could use them to take out command stations, infrastructure and important ships rather easily Key balancing points: The Javelin is a fragile starship. This emphasises staying undetected and only attacking (hence, revealing yourself) when the risk is worth the reward (being able to cloak again before enemies reach you). Engines are also on the fragile side, making staying undetected very important, and making engine damage an effective counter. (Subs with damaged engines tend to find themselves in a lot of trouble). Only has a single shot torpedo launcher, so groups of enemies will tear it to shreds Mines will really tear the Javelin apart. This is inspired somewhat by history, and emphasises the role of the Javelin as a surgical strike Starship, not as a frontline offensive unit. Not sure about the speed of the Javelin. Probably needs more tweaking and balancing, but I thought I'd get the idea out there whilst I was still inspired.
