Summary | 0000114: Interdictor Star Cruiser | ||||
Description | Inspired by the Star Wars extended universe capital ship of the same name, the Interdictor would be most effective in AI hands but would be useful to a clever human player as well. The basic concept is a mobile gravity turret (slowing down all nearby ships) with a couple major added features. The most notable would be rendering any ship inside its "gravity well" unable to enter wormholes - acting as a small-scale Black Hole Machine, if you will. Higher mark versions could potentially be outfitted with Tachyons as well, to aid in the ship's role of catching raiding parties. Weapons would probably be low damage but very high engine damage - the entire point of this thing is to leave the enemy forces helpless for other ships to pick off. The AI strategy for Interdictors would be to leave them near wormholes in low-power mode (so as to not hinder allied traffic) and switch them on as soon as a certain number of enemy ships come through - suddenly what was supposed to be a cunning raiding party is moving at a crawl, rapidly being disabled, and unable to escape out the way they came in. If you wanted to be really brutal, you could have them be cloaked while in low-power mode, so the poor sucker going against them has no idea there is a trap until his fleet is caught in it. Clever human uses could include keeping warp raids contained in the system they originate in (by blocking the wormholes leading farther into your territory), blocking the AI from retreating its forces when it becomes logical for it to do so, or stopping - or at least delaying - AI forces from rushing you after their command center is destroyed (just put the Interdictor in front of the wormhole that leads to your planet).
