Summary | 0010686: Bosses should start attacking when damaged
Description | Currently, it's possible to get situations where a boss won't fire a shot, but you can still hit them. The zephyrologist's wall-crawling attack in the second screenshot probably means he can take out the boss safely with that tactic (unless the boss is using a funky spell like sine). But it seems less exploit-y if the boss at least tries to fire back, instead of just walking back and forth and taking it. My proposed fix would be to have bosses start firing when they're damaged and continue firing at least for a little while -- or maybe forever on higher difficulties. This would probably fix several exploit-y tactics because a boss's shots can form a shield until you get close to them (unless your attacks are higher caliber than theirs).

Does this happen all the time? Do you have a save of tihs? |

I managed to reproduce this bug in 808, so I have bumped the version to 808. Save attached, screenshot too (bug10686-3.png is from the attached 808 save). Note: You may have to retry several times to trigger the behavior. It may depend on his shot type, and seems to trigger more when he's far away when you change rungs. You can hit him from the starting position (third rung from top) with your homing attack, or the second rung from top with your regular attack. I think he should start firing when he starts taking damage. It's fine if you can get a free hit on the boss from a weird position with certain classes, or even take them out in complete safety -- this game is about such tactics after all -- but I think the boss should at least start shooting when you hit him (if he isn't already). Even if he's using a shot type that won't be able to hit your position, it still makes the game more interesting because, once he starts shooting, you might have to then use careful timing or change positions (perhaps to a dangerous position) if his shots negate yours defensively. |

Thanks! * Bosses are now hyper-aggressive once you damage them: they'll keep up a steady stream of shots rather than waiting to have line of sight on you. This avoids certain exploity situations where you could hit them without them really firing at you at all, or firing shots to block your shots. |
